3 Tips for Wearing Socks & Boots

When the weather starts to get cooler, the boots start to come out. Boots are a staple for fall and winter. They go with basically any outfit and are a great way to keep your feet warm, dry and stylish. One of the best accessories for boots are socks. Tall socks that stick out from the top of the boots are a great way to add a little something to your outfit. Here are some tips about wearing socks with your boots.

1. Choosing a Length

When picking a sock, it is important to choose one that is an appropriate length. For shorter boots, wearing a sock that is exposed a little bit at the top is important. When you pick a sock that is too long for the boot, it looks frumpy and not as put together. For a taller boot, choose a sock that does go to your knee. This will keep your legs warm when the weather get colder and make the sock stand out even more.

2. Pairing with the Right Outfit

You can wear boots and socks with many different outfits. My personal favorites are with jeans and a sweater and with a dress. When wearing jeans, pick out a cute and cozy sweater. Add a sock that complements the sweater, and you have a great outfit. You also can pair them with your favorite dress or skirt. Adding tights also is a great option when the weather is cooler. Your boots and socks will last you through fall and into winter.

3. Make it Fun

By adding socks to your outfit, you are adding a little flair. Don't be afraid to step it up to bit. Choose a sock with some fun colors or patterns. There are socks with lace, stripes and even crazy patterns. These fun socks will make your outfit even better. Pick something that coordinates with your outfit but "jazzes" it up a little bit.

Wearing socks with boots is one of my favorite parts of fall. You can find socks for boots all over the place. I would suggest looking at department stores like Dillards, JCPenny or even Macy's to find some. These three simple tips will help you pick the best ones to wear.

Is Miley Cyrus For Real?: A Look At Her New Album Bangerz

I will admit to you that I was a fan of Miley Cyrus once. I was on that Hannah Montana bandwagon and even saw them “together” in concert. This is not one of my proudest moments, but I am being honest.

I feel like we have been watching Miley slowly go insane. She says that she is under a lot of pressure and just wants to be a teenager and experiment, but really? Cutting off all your hair, wearing no clothes and dancing inappropriately on TV? That is how you want to be yourself? Maybe taking a step back from the spotlight and taking some time for yourself would be a better idea. Take a vacation to an exotic island ... that is always exciting. Turn off your phone, email and everything and just lay on the beach. And please grow your hair back. I would pay money to have that hair. And I know I am not alone when I say that.

When Miley hosted SNL, I did not get to watch the whole episode, but I watched the highlights. Throughout the show I could not help but question if she was really serious about how she acts. She was all for making fun of herself, which is great. So is that why she's doing this? Is she just acting and then going to come out in a month and fool us all? I kind of hope so, but until then we are left we the horrible wrecking ball video. But for every bad music video, there are at least five parodies that make up for it. This one is my favorite for "Wrecking Ball". It is a combined with Mumford and Son's "Little Lion Man and is really good. Check it out below.

Well, Miley’s new album is out, and now it is time to see what she has been spending so much time on. Here are my reactions and thoughts my first time hearing the songs:

Adore
This song is very slow. I would assume that she is talking about Liam. I think this song is putting me to sleep .... zzz ... Oh yeah, it did. Sorry.

Bangerz
How many times can she say bangers?

4x4
This song kind of has a country twang to it. “Driving so fast, ‘bout to piss myself?” Really Miley, is that necessary? That’s a little distrubing. And could you repeat “Round and round and away we go” anymore? I get that you are a female rebel, but you don’t need to spend three minutes telling me this. And now I think I will have that some stuck in my head for that next week. Thanks.

My Darling
I don’t really have any comments about this song. Again, I just feel like she says the same thing over and over again. “My darling, stand by me.” Ok, we get it ... Liam left you, but it is time to move on.

Wrecking Ball
Ok, truth is, I really like this song. I am a fan of songs that start off soft and then build. I think this is my favorite song on the album. It is just so catchy and powerful. If only I could get the music video out of my head. I do really enjoy this mashup of wrecking ball and “Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons. Plus the dancing in the video is great, and I did not see an actual wrecking ball anywhere.

Love Money Party
I think the title of this song tells it all. There really is nothing else to life, right? I do feel like this is a good song to play at a party. It has a good beat to it and would be fun to dance to. But when you listen to it at nine in the morning, that’s a different story. Again, I think “Love, Money, Party” will be stuck in my head now.

#GETITRIGHT
This song seemed a little too personal for me. I’m pretty sure Miley is talking about the first time “in bed” with someone. It is very descriptive. And do you really have to use a hashtag in the title? Really? It does again have a catchy melody, I just think it is way to personal, and I feel like I know way more about Miley than I should.

Drive
I think that Miley is actually singing in this song, which is good. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this song. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love. It is just kind of average for me.

FU
Well, this song is clearly about Liam. And I can tell that in the first 10 seconds. I feel like Miley is a little bitter about this breakup. “You’re not even worth this rhyme.” Then why did you write a whole song, wait, whole album about him?

Do My Thang
I’m pretty sure this is Miley’s anthm. She is basically telling everyone that she does not care and will do what she wants. In the song, she tells me not to worry, but just listening to the song makes me worry. And the fact that she tries to rap but does so really slowly is concerning. I just don’t know. And being the grammar freak that I am, the fact that she spells “thing” “thang” just does not sit right with me.

Maybe You’re Right
I take back that grammar comment from the last song because she uses the right form of “you’re’’ in this song. And the fact that she says, “You may think I’m crazy” really makes me think that she knows that she is out of control. Again, I think this album should be titled, “This is for Liam Hemsworth.” It would just make things a little clearer. I do like the soulful Miley better than rapping Miley.

Someone Else
Ok, now we know that Liam took her heart. Maybe that’s the problem? She does not have a heart anymore, which is why she is acting the way she is? So, the solution to the problem is to follow the yellow brick road and get her heart back from the wizard. Maybe that will work? I do agree with her when she says, “I’ve turned into someone else.” And can we be a little more cliche with the quote from Corinthians about how love is patient? I just don’t really think that fits well. Sorry, Miley.

Rooting For My Baby
Again, another song about Liam. Is there a trend here or something? This was not my favorite song. I found it kind of depressing. Compared to all of the other song on the album, I think that this one is a dud.

On My Own
This song had a bit of an 80s vibe to it. I think Miley is trying to assure us that she is okay on her own, but by the looks of the other songs on this album, I’m not so sure.

Hands in the Air
This is another party song. Nothing really all that special about it.

So, there you have it. That’s Miley’s album for you. I have to say, personally, I was not that impressed. Miley could have done better. There are some nice party songs, and I like “Wrecking Ball,” but other than that, I could pass on the album. It can clearly be seen that she isn’t over Liam yet. She seems like she is just putting on a show now. I wonder what she will do next.

Get to Know Youngblood Hawke for MU's 2013 Homecoming Concert

Every year, Homecoming features a spirit rally and concert the Friday before the game. Last year, not well known at the time, Imagine Dragons, performed. This year, the band Youngblood Hawke is performing. The concert, along with the spirit rally, is October 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. It will take place on Rollins outside of the Student Center. If you have never heard of the band before, here is a little history of the band, plus a look at some of their best music.

Youngblood Hawke came together in 2011, after two members, Simon Katz and Sam Martin, decided to abandon their duo and bring in three other members to form a band. The band worked all summer long writing songs. The name for the band came from the title of a book by Herman Wouk.

They released their first EP with five songs last August and recently released their first album. According to the band's website, the band features music that has elements of pop, rock, indie, dance and even some hip hop.

"We Come Running," was the first single by the band. The song is about not letting your fears or obstacles get in the way of your dreams. It made the Billboard Top 10 in November 2012 and was featured on the soundtrack for FIFA 13.

Here are a couple other videos of Youngblood Hawke's music that will get you ready for the concert.

Plus, check out this interview with the band.

You can download the first album from Youngblood Hawke on iTunes now and get ready for them to perform for Homecoming. Imagine Dragons became really famous after they performed at Mizzou ... so who know, maybe these guys will be the next big thing.

Painted Shoes DIY

Do you have an old pair of white shoes laying around like me? Or do you want to spice up your shoe collection? Bright and fun Keds are all the rage now. Taylor Swift even has her own line of patterned Keds. I found this great DIY in the August issue of Redbook Magazine, and I knew that I had to try it on my pair of white shoes.

I was cleaning my room a couple weeks ago and found these white shoes in my shoe rack. They look like Keds, but they are the knock-off Target brand. I decided that it was time to revive them and find a way to wear them today. When I found this DIY in Redbook, the bright, fun colors really stood out to me. Plus, I had all the materials in my house, so I knew I had to try it. The directions were so easy to follow, and I think the shoes turned out great. The magazine even gave a link for a more detailed tutorial, which you can find here.

What You Need:

  • 1 Pair of white shoes
  • 3-5 acrylic paints
  • Scissors
  • Painters tape
  • Small paint brush

First, cover the surface you are working on with newspaper and gather your supplies. Then you need to remove the laces and cover the tongue and the outsole of the shoe with tape. This will keep these areas white. Next, take ¼-inch painter's tape. I only had 1 in. thick masking tape, but cut it in fourths to make it the right size. Start making boxes on the shoes. The magazine suggests that you vary the size and width of the boxes. As I tried it, I realized that there really was no rhyme or rhythm to the pattem. I started out trying to follow the picture, but all the sides are not shown. Instead, you can be creative and place the strips of tape all around the shoe. Once you have completed this step, your shoes should look like this:

My tape did not really stick all that well, but that did not matter. The important thing is to use a small, hard paint brush and not a lot of paint. I would also suggest using your fingers to press down the tape before you paint a square to ensure that the colors don’t mix. Start with your first color and only use a small amount of paint. Paint the entire square, and do not be afraid to paint the tape.

This is what my shoes looked like when I was done painting. The only hard part about painting was the lace holes. My painting was also not exactly accurate, but once I took the tape off, you could not tell. I really love how my shoes turned out. They are such a great addition to my wardrobe. While the shoes are not the most durable, and I do not think they will last through the fall, they are a great for right now. You could wear them with a nice pair of boyfriend jeans and a T-shirt for a day look.

I can’t wait to wear these this fall! Have you ever done a DIY with your shoes? Let us know!

8 Dorm Room Essentials

Can you believe it is already the beginning of August? Where did summer go? In a week or so we will be heading to campus, many students for their first time. Before you head off, you need to finish all of your shopping. Shopping for college can be overwhelming. Every store has a list of hundreds of things they say you will need. But what are the essentials? What items should be on the top of your shopping list? Other than the must haves, here are some of my top picks that you can’t live without.

You Need a Lounge Chair

You will be spending a lot of time in your dorm room. It is not only your place to sleep, but also to hang out. Keeping your door open allows you to meet people in your hall. Having a lounge chair in your room allows more people to hang out in your room. You can have movie nights and get ready easier with a lounge chair. It just provides a little extra seating to make your room feel a little nicer.

Invest in a Mattress Topper

Your bed is probably the most important thing in your dorm room, so you want to make sure that it is as comfortable as possible. Investing in a mattress topper will make your old, hard, university-provided mattress much more pleasant for sleeping. Add some soft sheets on top and you will sleep easy at night.

3M Command Hooks are Everything

Check your dorms policy about command hooks. If they allow them, use them. These things will keep your room more organized. You can place them all over the place and hang things up like your purse, backpack and even your jacket. You can even get different sizes to hold different things. If your dorm does not allow them, try to find other ways to stay organized. Adding storage containers in your closet also can keep your room more organized throughout the year.

A Drying Rack is a Good Idea

College may be the first time that you have to do laundry by yourself. Be sure to check the label of your clothes before you wash them. Some clothes should not be dried because they will shrink. (Trust me, I know from experience.) Instead, bring a drying rack. Use one that folds up, and store it when you are done. A drying rack will keep your clothes looking nice.

Light-blocking Blinds Will Protect Your Sleep

If you have a window in your room, bring light-blocking blinds. These things will keep the light out of your room and make it easier to sleep once the sun comes up. They also keep the hot sun out of your dorm. And do not forget a rod to hang the blinds. Dorms are not equipped with these, and they really help the whole blind process.

Don’t Forget Water Bottles

Bringing a couple water bottles will make your life so much easier. Walking everywhere to class, especially in August, is hot and it is nice to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Plus there are bubblers, (sorry, I’m from Milwaukee, Wis.) I mean, drinking fountains all around campus. Having a water bottle will save you money because you will not have to buy plastic ones, and it is better for the environment. If you do not like how the water tastes from the fountain, invest in a water filter. Keep it filled in your dorm and fill up your bottle before you leave. Or you can even invest in a water bottle with a built-in filter.

And Coffee Mugs, Too

Having coffee mugs also is important. If you are lucky and have a coffee maker, they are a lifesaver. Even if you do not, you can use your mugs in other ways. You can always use a microwave and make some tea on the way to class in the winter. Plus, if you get sick tea is a great way to sooth your throat. And you also can take it with you on your trip to Starbucks. A well hidden secret, you get $0.10 cents off your order at Starbucks if you bring your own mug.

Of Course Pictures and Wall Decorations

Bring as many pictures and wall decorations as you can. The key to having a great dorm is making it feel very comfortable. Put pictures up of all of your friends back home and even leave some room for the new ones you are going to make. The more personal you make your dorm room, the more you will enjoy spending time in it. Wall stickers are a great invention, too. They just add a little something to your room.

This by no means is all the stuff that you need for college. You will still need to buy your bedspread, sheets, hampers ... and much more. These are just some essentials that can sometimes be overlooked on the shopping list but are very important. Shopping for your dorm should be fun. Just make sure you buy things to make it your own. It may be a small space, but just adding a few things will really make it a wonderful place to live.

"Project Runway" Preview: CGM Talks with Timothy Westbrook

"Project Runway" kicked off its 12th season Thursday, July 18. Fifteen new designers and one returning designer started the competition to win the biggest prize in the history of the show. The winner will receive more than $500,000 in cash and prizes.

The show started by introducing all the new designers and bringing back designer Kate from Season 11. The challenge then began as parachuters fell from the sky, and the designers learned that this was the unconventional challenge where they had to use the parachutes for their materials.

One of the contestants, Timothy Westbrook, stood out from the crowd for his more unusual techniques. Westbrook, who is more of a performance artist than a designer, is very big into the sustainability of fashion. During the episode he did not use the electric sewing machine, any hair products, nor did he put any makeup on his model.

While some might call him crazy, Westbrook is more of an inspiration. He also is from my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisc., so I got the opportunity to sit down with him and talk about his life as a designer and who he is as a person.

Westbrook believes in sustainability and trying to reuse and recycle things from the environment. He loves unicorns and sees them as a metaphor for saving the environment.

“I think it also reminds people to believe in anything, because anything is possible,” Westbrook said about his love for unicorns.

In his own life, he tries to reduce as much as possible. He works in a studio with big windows and does not turn on the lights.

“I have non-electric looms where I make all my fabric,” Westbrook said. He makes this fabric out of many different recycled materials, including cassette tapes and plastic bags.

This may be hard for a designer, but Westbrook considers himself an artist who creates art pieces, he said.

“I’m not interested in ready-to-wear,” Westbrook said. “For me, ready-to-wear and sustainability is happening, we don’t need to make it. One of a kind art pieces and sustainability really talk about how to rethink things, and that is what I am able to create.”

During the first episode, the judges were quick to judge Westbrook for his choices to have the model barefoot and without makeup. It even left fans thinking he was a little strange.

Westbrook is an innovator and is doing his part to help the environment.

“I live my own life,” he said. “I’m very happy with what I do and how much I reduce.”

Westbrook had a few tips for college students to live a more sustainable life. He suggests turning off lights, taking the stairs and using a bike instead of a car. These simple changes will help you start taking care of your body and help the environment.

“Just think about the environmental impact of every step of the day,” Westbrook said.

You can see more of Westbrook and his unconventional ways on this season of "Project Runway." Catch up on him and the other 15 designers to see what they create. Check out mylifetime.com/show/project-runway for more information.

Summer Denim: Five Trends to Try

Now that it is officially summer and the temperatures are heating up, wearing jeans is not the best option. Even with the heat, there are other ways to wear denim. Wearing different kinds of denim is a new stylish trend, and even the celebrities are trying it. Here are five denim trends that you can try, as seen on some of your favorite celebrities.

1. Bring Back Your Jean Jacket

Jean jackets are back in style. Throwing on a jean jacket completes your look. You can try it with your favorite sundress, like Jessica Alba did. Adding a jean jacket can help you layer your look. It is a great way to take your dress from day to night as the temperature starts to drop.

2. Try a Jean Vest

Wearing a jean vest can be a great way to spice up your wardrobe. As seen on Kate Bosworth, adding a dark colored jean vest can add dimension to your look. Just like a jean jacket, jean vests are great layering pieces. But, different from jean jackets, vests can be worn on even the hottest of summer days.

3. Wear your Chambray Shirt

Chambray shirts have been popular for some time now. They are an essential piece to a girl’s wardrobe. There are so many ways to wear a chambray shirt. For summer, try pairing your chambray shirt with a pair of printed shorts, like Alessandra Amrosio did. Add a pair of sandals and some bracelets and you have a look that you can wear all summer long.

4. What about a Chambray Dress?

Dresses are the perfect outfit for summer. They are so easy to throw on and they keep you cool. Have you considered trying a chambray dress? Wearing a chambray dress is a great way to stay cool, but put together this summer. As you can see in the photo above, Anne Hathaway is rocking her chambray dress. You can pair it with sandals, like Hathaway did for a day look, or even dress it up for night by wearing a pair of heels.

5. Don’t Forget your Cut-off Shorts

Shorts are a summer essential. The hot weather makes wearing long pants unbearable. Cut-off jean shorts are the best way to beat summer heat. You can buy a new pair or even make your own out of an old pair of pants. Cut-offs can be worn to the beach, like Selena Gomez, or even a weekend barbecue. Try a high-waisted pair with a crop top and sandals for a stylish look.

Denim is a wardrobe staple, but there are more ways to wear it than just jeans. This summer, restyle your denim with these new trends. If the celebrities can do it, so can you!

5 Tips to Staying in Touch with Your College Friends

Summer can be great. If you have no classes or exams, you have more free time for yourself. But now that the stress of finals has worn off and summer vacation has set in, you might be missing your friends from school. Going home for the summer means you can’t go to your friend’s dorm right down the hall or even run into them at the dining hall. If you’re missing your friends, here are some tips on how to stay in touch this summer.

1. Send a quick text
If your summer has gotten busy and you haven’t gotten the chance to talk to your friends recently, shoot them a quick text. It could be a quick “Hey,” or maybe “I miss you.” Knowing that you are thinking about them will make them smile. You can even ask how their summer has been and talk about what you are going to do when you get back to school.

2. Post a picture on Facebook
Look back through your old photos from the past year and post one of them on your friend’s wall. You can reminisce on the good times you’ve had. You could even post a funny picture to make your friend smile.

3. Set up a get together
If you don’t live far from your friends, set up a time to get together. You can go to the other person’s hometown and explore their city with them. You could even meet for lunch or get dressed up and go out for dinner. It is a nice way to catch up and hang out before you have to go back to school.

4. Plan a road trip
If you need a weekend away, get some friends together and take a road trip to visit a friend who lives farther. You can have some fun in the car and have a mini vacation once you get there. Having friends from all over is great in college, and even better when you get to visit them for even for just a few days.

5. Use Skype and FaceTime
If you live far away from your college friends, take advantage of technology. Today, video chat, including Skype and FaceTime, are a great way to catch up with your friends. It might not be the same as hanging out in person, but you can see each other and catch up. Maybe even try watching your favorite show together and talking about it.

These simple tips will help you keep in touch with your college friends all summer long. Before you know it, you will be back at school and can hang out all the time.

CGM Exclusive: Lauren Conrad’s Advice for You

Hollywood’s “it girl” Lauren Conrad, known for her fashion and beauty expertise, has taken over the publishing industry.

I got to sit down with Conrad while she was in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wis., for a book signing June 12. Even though the power went out before the signing started, Conrad was a good sport and made it work for the hundreds of fans who lined up to buy her book “Infamous” and have her autograph it. Conrad talked about her new book and tips on how to get that internship or job you want.

“Infamous,” in stores now, is the third and final book in her “Fame Game” series. The series is about four girls, but focuses on a girl named Madison Parker. “It’s an insiders look into the world of both reality television and the entertainment industry,” Conrad described.

This is the eighth book that Conrad has published since 2009. Conrad began talking to her publisher, Harper Collins, years ago about writing. They even discussed her writing a tell-all book about her experiences in Hollywood, but Conrad was uncomfortable with that.

“I felt like I had a story to tell, but I wanted to tell my own, and I didn’t feel like I was in a position to tell other people’s stories or their secrets,” Conrad said.

Conrad has an interesting story herself. Starting as a reality star on “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” and “The Hills,” Conrad eventually made her way into the fashion industry. The television exposure both helped and hindered her career.

“Obviously coming from entertainment you have a lot more to prove in the fashion industry,” Conrad said.

Today, Conrad has proven herself. Along with the books, she has two fashion lines, LC by Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s Department Stores and Paper Crown.

When it comes to getting that first internship, Conrad has advice for college students.

“I think that internships are vital,” Conrad said. “A lot of times, internships can lead to job opportunities. I know I personally have worked with interns, and when it comes time to hire, if you already have an employee you know is going to do a good job, it’s great.”

Conrad stresses the importance of getting as much experience as possible. From her personal experience with interns and with Kohl’s, Conrad said that many girls that have summer internships end up getting hired.

Interviews are a very important part of getting that internship and job. As Conrad said, “What’s important in a job interview is not necessarily what you are wearing. You definitely want to dress your age, but professional. Hair and makeup should be polished and clean.”

Conrad said every girl should have at least three staple items in her closet ready for interviews ─ a blazer, a white button down and a tailored bottom (pencil skirt or cropped pant).

Looking back, the 27-year-old Conrad has learned a lot through her experiences and gave some advice to her 20-year-old self.

“I think that when you’re young, it’s difficult to see the big picture,” she said. “I think that little things seem very important at the time. So I think just not to worry so much.”

Conrad teamed up with Kohl’s and spent the day in Milwaukee doing some charity work with three girls from the local Children’s Hospital.
