5 Items That Will Help You Get Through Finals

Finals are looming right around the corner, which means it is time to get your backpack ready. Of course you need your books, but there are some essentials you should remember to pack in your bag. Whether you’re a freshman or an upperclassmen, prepare for your exams by adding these five items to your school bag so you’re always ready for anything.

1. A change purse

Sometimes a debit card just won’t cut it. Carrying some extra coins and a few dollars can be super helpful when you run into “cash only” situations. Whether it be needing change for a meter when you rush off to the library or a dollar to buy something yummy to snack on at midnight, carrying a little extra money is a must.

2. A small “touch up” bag

Find a cute, hand-sized bag to throw some touch-up essentials in. Gum, lipgloss, a mini-size deodorant and a travel-size body spray are all good ideas to add to this bag. It is my belief that when you look and feel well, you test well. Also you never know when you may need to crash somewhere overnight and may need to freshen up the next morning!

3. A high protein or fiber snack

Nothing is worse than being stuck in the middle of class, and you realize you are starving! Keep your stomach happy by packing a high protein or high fiber snack in your bag. Great choices are a bag of peanuts, a fiber-rich granola bar, an apple or roasted soy nuts or sunflower seeds are all easy options to throw into your bag.

4. Phone charger

Even though Ellis and the Student Center both have free charging stations, which can be quite useful at times, sometimes you just need one handy. Nothing can turn a good day into a bad one a quick as a dead phone. If you don’t have a spare charger, at least store a syncing cable so you can use a computer to charge it.

5. Pill box

A bad headache or an upset stomach are never fun to deal with, but especially not when you’re trying to cram for an exam in two hours. Buy a pill box with a few different compartments, and pack medicines you may need, such as allergy pills, Advil and any prescriptions you take. If you happen to forget to take something or get a massive headache or allergy attack, you will have backup in your backpack!

After buying a new, stylish bag for class, be sure to add these essentials so you are ready for anything college throws your way!

Restaurant Review: Casablanca Mediterranean Grill

Restaurant: Casablanca Mediterranean Grill
Address: 501 Elm St. Columbia Mo
Food type: Mediterranean
Price point: $16 and below

We think Casablanca Mediterranean Grill is by far one of the best restaurants in Columbia. If you have not tried this restaurant yet, be sure to put it on your list. If you are a fan of mediterranean food, you will definitely be pleased with the wide array of choices. If you have never even tried mediterranean, then it is probably time you take a chance, and this is the place to do it at!

Casablanca is located right at the beginning of downtown, so it is an easy walk from campus to grab a quick lunch. They also are student budget friendly, with appetizers starting at $1.95 and the biggest plate, the Sultan, costing still only $15.95. Most meals are between $5 and $10, so it won’t kill your wallet by any means.

The food is always fresh and very delicious. They have all sorts of choices, including Falafel, Gyros, Couscous, Shish Kabobs and Hummus just to name a few options. If you are not familiar with mediterranean food, the menu does a great job at describing the items, plus the staff is very friendly and will explain any item to you in a heartbeat. Many meals come with the choice of beef, lamb, chicken or vegetarian, so they can suit any taste.

I would recommend the House Gyro for those new to mediterranean food -- it is a pita bread filled with spiced beef, lettuce, tomato, onion and feta cheese served with choices of hummus, hot sauce or tanziki sauce. This is a great introduction to the tastes and style of Mediterranean food without being overwhelmed. For those more accustomed to the style, I would suggest the Mediterranean Plate, which has two dolmas and two falafel and comes with rice, hummus and pita bread. If your meal does not come with rice, I highly recommend getting it as a side -- it is always moist, fluffy and has the perfect amount of spices.

Why You Need to Drink More Tea

The summer months can leave you quite parched with severe heat and outdoor activities. Although it’s important to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, don’t turn a blind eye on other drinks that can be great for you, like tea! Tea has great health benefits, including helping you lose weight and making your skin look better. No matter what your taste preference may be, we have outlined the benefits of three different types of teas to help you find the perfect one to sip on during your summer days.

Green Tea

  • Ever heard of those nasty things called free radicals? They attach to DNA and slowly damage it. Green tea has tons of antioxidants called catechins in it that help stop the damage free radicals cause.
  • Protect yourself from cancer by drinking green tea. Studies have shown it can help lower the risk for many types of cancer, including breast, skin and stomach cancer.
  • Banish bad cravings, at least somewhat, by drinking more green tea. Green tea helps balance blood sugars and helps keep your energy level, so you don’t have any annoying spikes and crashes that lead to you feeling agitated, tired and craving junk food.

Oolong Tea

  • Protect your smile! This tea helps prevent plaque buildup on teeth and tooth decay. Oolong tea helps combat bacteria, giving you fresher breath, too!
  • Oolong tea helps speed up metabolism so you burn more calories -- an added bonus for swimsuit season. It also increases lipolysis, the system that burns fats and prevents them from staying in your body.
  • If you struggle with eczema or similar skin problems, drinking three cups of oolong tea a day can help manage symptoms. In one study, patients saw immense improvement with their skin in one week.

Chamomile Tea

  • Fight off colds by drinking more chamomile tea! Studies have shown that chamomile tea helps boost the immune system and fight infections.
  • Dealing with cramps is no fun at all. Chamomile tea can help relieve them thanks to an amino acid it helps create that relaxes muscle spasms.
  • Sleep better by drinking chamomile tea before bed. It acts as a mild sedative and can help you relax and destress after a long day.

Perfect Abs: How to Do Your Plank Right

Summertime is definitely the time we are all concerned about how our bodies look. The one area almost all of us have at the top of our fitness list are ours abs. Whether you want to rock a cute bikini or try out summer’s hot trend of a crop top, you want your abs to be flat, toned and looking hot. A move everyone should have in their ab workout is the plank. Planks can help you get flat abs in no time, but only if you are doing them right. Below are four ways you might be sabotaging your planks and how to fix them so you can get flat, toned, bikini-ready abs!

1. Your body is too loose

To really get the full force out of your plank, you need to engage your entire body. If your body is too loose in your plank, you won't really be working your muscles to their full potential. When up in the plank position, flex your core, legs and back like you’re trying to show off your muscles. This will engage your muscles and make them work harder to get better results.

2. You let your booty drop down
Your body should create a flat, straight line when in plank position. An error many people make is to drop their hips and booty. This creates a C-shape, which does not engage your abs at all! Focus on creating a straight line from the tip of your head all the way to your toes; this will help your body stay straight and work all the muscles equally and correctly.

3. You hold your breath or breathe too quickly
You generally think of breathing techniques for cardio, but it’s important to think about in a plank, too! When you hold your breath or breathe too fast, you’re focusing too much on your breathing rather than on your body. Take deep, smooth breaths in and out and do not hold your breath. Breathing easy will help you put all your focus on your position.

4. You don’t hold it long enough
You really need to actually “feel the burn” to get the most out of your plank. Throwing your plank off with the issues above might be a reason why you’re having problems holding it long enough. You want to hold a plank for at least 45 seconds. A good indicator of holding a plank long enough is a slight burning in your core area.

6 Summer CD Releases to Watch For

There is nothing better than to roll your windows down and blast some great tunes in your car on a summer day. There are lots of new albums coming out this summer, so we’ve compiled a list of six releases you should keep an eye out for. From rap to electronic, there is bound to an album that perks your interest on our list!

Skillet - Rise
Released June 25

Skillet comes back to the music scene with their ninth album, which follows their recognizable mix of soaring rock music with impacting lyrics. The Christian rock band, which features husband and wife duo John and Korey Cooper as the lead vocals, features a wide arrange of styles and subjects in this album. John Cooper said in an interview with CCM Magazine that the album is a “roller coaster ride.” The album includes 12 tracks, and the deluxe version includes three bonus tracks and a DVD.

Editors - The Weight of Your Love
Released July 1

The British alternative rock band Editors recently released their fourth studio album, The Weight of Your Love. This is their first album since the departure of lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz. They sound like a mix of Kings of Leon and Dashboard Confessional, and lead singer Tom Smith says they pulled a lot from R.E.M and Arcade Fire for this new album. The album features 11 tracks with an option of a double CD, which adds five additional tracks.

Mariah Carey - The Art of Letting Go
Releasing July 23

After a four-year hiatus from music -- marrying Nick Cannon and birthing twins can keep you pretty busy -- Mariah Carey has announced she is releasing a new album! This tightly kept-under-wraps album (Wal-Mart actually leaked the title) is her 14th album. The tracks and album art have not been released, but Mariah has confirmed it will be full of her famous ballads with some not-so-expected styles. The first single, #Beautiful, is currently at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Selena Gomez - Stars Dance
Releasing July 23

Selena Gomez finally is releasing her debut solo album the day after she turns 21-- let’s hope she isn’t feeling too rough on launch day. The album has 12 tracks and will be mostly pop and dance music. She has stated that Britney Spears and Skrillex were both big influences on the music for this album. We expect this to a great choice to blast in your car or living room when you want to have a random dance party.

Tech N9ne - Something Else
Releasing July 30

Tech N9ne has a history of throwing together fast, catchy lyrics with heavy and recognizable beats. This album is sure to head that way, although Tech N9ne stated this album has huge depth to the lyrics and was able to write songs about subjects he was afraid to in the past. This is the 13th album for the Kansas City-bred rapper. The album features lots of collaborations, some with big names such as Cee-Lo Green, Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B and T-Pain. The album has 21 tracks, separated into three distinct sections; earth, wind and fire.

Blue October - Sway
Releasing August 20

Blue October, the alternative band whose album Foiled in 2006 brought them mainstream, will be releasing their seventh album in August. They kicked off this album with a PledgeMusic campaign to help them raise funds for the album. Blue October left their major recording label and is now a fully independent band, so they needed a bit of help financially to create the new album. They were able to reach their goal within three days and are currently at 176 percent of their goal -- hopefully this means the album will be amazing!

Beauty Review: Rusk Shine Spray

Product: Rusk Sensories Bright Shine Spray

Cost: $13

Scent: Chamomile and Lavender

Where to Buy: Your local Rusk affiliated salon, Amazon, Ebay, sometimes TJ Maxx/ Marshalls

Pros:
  • Easy to use
  • Smells great
  • Helps hair look healthy and shiny, plus sun protection
  • Works on hair when wet or dry

Cons:
  • Meant for use on only blonde/highlighted/gray hair
  • Can easily make hair too shiny or look oily if not spread evenly
  • Scent can be overwhelming to some
  • Difficult to use on thin hair

Overview:
The Rusk Sensories Bright Shine Spray is a light shine spray meant for use on blonde or highlighted hair. It comes in a small sized bottle that is convenient to place in a purse, travel bag or suitcase. It is chamomile and lavender scented, which is pleasant but can be overwhelming to those who do not like strong scents. I do not recommend using this with other highly scented hair products; it would definitely be a scent overload.

The spray can be used on wet or dry hair. I suggest using it on wet hair if you want more softness and dry hair if you want more shine. To use, spritz 3 to 5 spritzes throughout hair and brush through. If using on dry hair, especially if you have fine or thin hair, we recommend spraying it in your hands and rubbing through. The spray can be really heavy on fine hair and end up making your hair look oily instead of shiny; using your hands helps spread the product out more evenly. This is a great shine spray for summer because it contains sunscreen to help protect your hair color from fading in the hot summer sun.

5 Easy Steps to Get Eyes Like Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis is by far one of the hottest young hollywood actresses out there. FHM magazine did after all name her “Sexiest Woman in the World 2013.” She has it all when it comes to looks, but her most coveted feature is definitely her eyes. Those eyes make all the boys stop and stare and make us girls wonder, “how do I get mine to look like that?” Well College Glossers, we have the answer on how to get Mila Kunis eyes in five easy steps. Inspiration for this look comes from Mila’s spot in the Gemfields jewelry ad campaign.

1. Begin with a primer
To make any eyeshadow last through the day, and especially in the hot months of summer, it is important to use a primer underneath your eyeshadow to make it stick and stay crease free. Creme eyeshadows work great as a primer; a favorite of ours is the Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Seashells. Use your finger and smooth the tan shade over entire lid.

2. Base and highlight
Mila has a lot of depth to her eyes. Achieve this by layering a medium brown over a light tan. We love the light tan color on the left side of the e.l.f. Essential Brightening Eye Color palette in Luxe as the base and highlight. Use a medium sized brush to put an even amount of color on your eyelid and underneath your eyebrow on your browbone.

3. Crease
Add dimension to your eyes by using the top right medium brown color of the same e.l.f palette in the crease of your eye. We recommend a tapered brush, which is shaped like a cone. This is the best shape for getting color in your crease -- and only in your crease! Blend into the light tan shade to avoid looking streaky.

4. Outer and inner liner
Mila gets her sexy, smoky eyes by layering a darker brown liner over a lighter one. For the lighter eyeliner, use the same medium brown color from the e.l.f palette you used for the crease. Using a small, wet, angled brush, sweep a medium line on your upper and lower lash lines. Don’t worry about making it perfect; part of the fun with a smoky eye is that it can be slightly messy.

Next, use Maybelline’s Line Stylist eyeliner in Espresso to draw a thin line right next to your upper and lower lash lines. On your lower lash line, make the line darker on the outer corner and lessen it as you go towards your nose. Don’t forget to line your lower lash water line! Using a smudge brush, such as the e.l.f Essential Smudge Eye Sponge, lightly smudge the liner as close to lash line as possible.

5. Mascara and inner highlight
Finish the look off with a coat of black-brown mascara on top and bottom lashes. We love L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original. Add a bit of highlight to the inner corner of your eyes and ta-da! You have Mila Kunis worthy eyes. A perfect choice for the inner highlight is the lighter color of the Maybelline Eye Duets Liner/Shadow in Double Latte.

5 Tips for Finding Your Perfect Summer Job

Summer brings a ton of fun things to do: you could hit the pool, visit a zoo, go to an amusement park, head out on a road trip or update your summer wardrobe. But what is one thing these all have in common? Money. Time to find a summer job! But where to begin? Below, we’ve listed five great summer jobs that can help you make some extra bank to spend on fun this summer!

1. We All Scream for Ice Cream!
A lot of ice cream parlors and shops only open seasonally, so they are usually looking for summer-only help. They are also generally staffed with college-aged kids, so you will feel right at home with your coworkers.

2. Save a Life

Becoming a lifeguard is definitely a traditional summer break job. This job takes a bit of training, so be aware that it is not one you can start right off the bat if you’ve never done it. To be a lifeguard, you need to be able to swim 500 meters in under 10 minutes and be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED. If you love the outdoors, sun and water, look into taking a training course and becoming a lifeguard at your local pool.

3. Help Kids Learn
If you like children, or happen to be an education major, look into helping teach or being a camp counselor. Lots of businesses have children’s camps or programs over the summer. Places to look into are churches, museums, schools, daycares and zoos. Plus, a job like this allows your nights to be free.

4. Passion for Fashion
A job in retail can be very enjoyable if you love clothes and fashion. Getting a retail job is a great idea if you want to get a summer job that can extend after summer. Pick a few of your favorite stores and put in some applications. You will enjoy helping people pick out clothes at a store you love and you will also get a discount--hello shopping spree!

5. Life is a Roller Coaster
Amusement parks are constantly hiring for summer only help. They also have tons of jobs to choose from, including food service, running the rides, helping work shows and running fun side games. If you love interacting with people, try being one of the game workers--you will get to talk to tons of people and give cute stuffed animals away!

No matter where you're looking for a job this summer, be sure to check out Hire Mizzou Tigers. The site posts awesome job openings from around the country geared especially for Mizzou students!
