How to Ace Summer Class Style

Summer’s here! That means time to bring out our favorite swimsuits, skirts, crop tops and bright colors! However, there is this one thing called summer school that some of us have in the way of our fun. You can still come up with a super summery outfit that incorporates all of these things for an outfit for summer school!

Kathryn (pictured above) is a fashionista is from L.A. who attends Mizzou and is ready for her summer classes to begin as she wears a basic tank with a fun pair of destroyed high-waisted shorts and some cute strappy sandals. A new trend is tying long and flowy basic tanks on the front or side to create a more fun and flirty look aside from just a basic tank. It adds a different twist to any outfit. This basic loose tank is from Brandy Mellville, a very popular and unique boutique in southern California! Basic tanks are a must-have for the summer because they go with any outfit and are something you can just throw on and you’re out the door! A key thing is to pair them with cute accessories such as a statement necklace, bangles or bold earrings.

Destroyed high-waisted shorts are definitely a staple piece to have in your wardrobe. Throw in some fun ones like ombre, neon and studded pairs, too! They are so edgy and easy to pair with because the focus is on the shorts. These cutoffs are in style and will be for many seasons. Something else to pair with them besides a basic tank for a summer class would be a graphic T-shirt or tank. They have been all over recent magazines and worn by many celebrities. These shorts in particular are from Brandy Mellville, as well.

Summer means bringing out the cute sandals and gladiators we all have. Strappy sandals can add more versatility to the outfit rather than just plain old flip flops. T-strap sandals, gladiators, strappy sandals and more are important when spicing up a summer’s day outfit! These strappy black sandals Kathryn wears were purchased from Marshalls.

Have fun being stylish in summer school, Glossers!

Mizzou's Got Style: High-end Casual, Denim on Denim and Skater Girl

From skater skirts to funky flats to denim shirts, Mizzou students really showed off their personal style this week. Check out who CGM caught looking extra hip during the final weeks of the spring semester. No norts and running shoes for them!

High-end Casual

I always see senior computer science major Chen Ju on the Campus View shuttle on my way from campus. She catches my eye everyday with chic pairs of shoes, bold blouses and unique combinations of pieces. I finally mustered up enough energy to -- creepishly -- get off at her bus stop and pursue the chance to show CGM readers how stylish she was, and I was thrilled to find Ju a friendly delight!

Ju knows how to throw on a casual ensemble while still leaving her mark on Mizzou’s campus catwalk. “I change my style a lot,” Ju said. “It depends on my mood for the day.” She goes on fashion excursions at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s, and she looks to Jessica Alba, Miranda Kerr and Olivia Palermo for bits of style inspiration. When it comes to pondering an ensemble for school, Ju advised women to wear flats; if a heel is necessary it should be as low as possible!

Statement Pieces on a Budget: button-down, cardigan, leggings, shoes

Denim on Denim

Junior strategic communication major Nick Holder describes his style as “intellectual but also rough.” “I might be smart, but I might punch you in the face, too,” Holder humorously said to explain his use of words. Men’s style icons like Ryan Gosling and Kanye West top Holder’s list of admiration as well as late-and-great actors such as Steve Mcqueen and Cary Grant. “Don’t try too hard,” Holder said to readers about dressing to impress. “People can [always] tell when you look like you’re trying too hard!”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: button-down, satchel, boots

Skater Girl

Skater skirts are one of this season’s fashion must-haves, and sophomore journalism major Jia Lim wore hers well! She loves crop tops and daisy dukes for spring weather, and Topshop serves as her go-to site for fabulous finds. When the weather reaches its peak, Lim advises students to dress with a balancing act; “If I show off my bottom, I don’t wanna show off the top.” Meaning, if you want to show off those stallion legs with short shorts, pair them with a cute tee or blouse rather than a revealing tank or bandeau. It may be warm outside, but keep it as classy as possible!

Pastels & Paparazzi Fashion Show Rocks Summer's Hottest Looks

On a rainy Friday, dozens of MU's most fashionable students filed into Perlow-Stevens art gallery, decked out in platform heels, shiny gold jewelry and chic ensembles. This dazzling array of people fit right into the "Pastels and Paparazzi" themed fashion show, which featured designers from St. Louis, Chicago and Columbia. The event was sponsored by the Black Programming Committee at MU.

Main takeaways for the upcoming summer fashion season were floral prints, breezy maxi dresses and lots of color. The Protagonist Collection by MU student Cyndi Robertson featured a funky juxtaposition of masculine and feminine inspired pieces. Striped ties accented girly white dresses, and models rocked white vests and pants.

Yan by Hannah Cusack showed several dresses the women in the audience couldn't wait to get their hands on after the show. Many of her dresses had an evening event in mind, and the final white gown was a showstopper. Cusack also won the heart of the judges and walked away with a $500 cash prize and a free photo shoot for her clothing line.

Fellow MU student Elise Lammert looked to tribal prints for her summer-ready collection. Models hit their stride in strappy sandals and hi-low maxi dresses in sunny yellow and orange hues. These pieces are a girl's best friend for vacation, a pool day or even an afternoon out with the girls.

Mother and daughter design duo LaRoyce and Rikki Byrd's line Roi & Rik focused on color and featured a multitude of items in lime green, yellow and powder blue. A standout was a shiny metallic skirt, which had a futuristic feel and is just the piece for girls that don't like to shy away from bold fashion.

Other highlights included tropical swimwear by Jasmine Stocking, urbanwear and classic graphic print tees by Arrognt Empire, Basic Bots and Lost Liberty and L.A. chic clothing from new downtown boutique Muse. This summer is all about fun, so let these designs inspire you to play with your look and try something new.

Mizzou's Got Style: Vintage Gems, Pop of Color and Dark Vibes

The school year may be wrapping up, but the style on campus is as fresh as ever. Chiffon skirts, skull scarves and bright blazers were just some of the fun pieces we caught on campus this week. Check out these stylish tigers.

Vintage Gems

When we saw sophomore business major Yujie Huang walking across our campus catwalk with this unique and nostalgic version of a chiffon maxi skirt, we had to track her down! She loves raiding the racks of thrift stores and discovering treasures like the ones she was wearing last week! Marie Claire magazine guides Huang when she’s having a fashion obstacle and she advised readers to simply take a look in the mirror if they ever question an ensemble.

Pop of Color

If CGM ever decided to create a list of stylish professors at Mizzou, French graduate student Elisabeth Aguilar would easily land near the top. Aguilar describes her style as “classic with trendy accents.” “I love European style in general because it’s really sophisticated and it’s not over done,” Aguilar said. She confides in small boutiques in major cities when on a fashion scavenger hunt and she made it clear that Nordstrom is always a go-to spot if boutiques aren’t in reach. When asked for fashion advice, Aguilar said this: “I think just keep it simple and be yourself; whatever you wear, wear it with confidence because that reflects who you are.”

Dark Vibes

Junior journalism major Nina Buckhalter caught our eye with her gorgeous alligator-skin tote and chic color coordination. “My style is all over the place,” Buckhalter said. “Some days I’ll dress boho, laid back and other days I’m prim [with] either blazers or off the shoulder sweaters.” Buckhalter recommended that college women shop at Forever 21 for cute finds at a bargain, and for well deserved splurging, she pointed us to Zara. “Wear what you like,” Buckhalter said. “It’s hard to stand out on the university’s campus, but if you have certain pieces like a ring or your grandmother’s brooch, it’ll spice [your outfit] up.”

Mizzou's Got Style: Pretty Hippie, Swank Zig-zags and Vintage Flair

Mizzou students broke out their finest spring attire last week including sandals, shades and shorts that are to die for. Read on to see who we spotted rocking these spring trends, and see what fashionistas and stores inspired them!

Pretty Hippie

Last week, freshman psychology major Brenna Metrew used the weather to her advantage and rocked an adorable mini sundress. She paired the tiered dress with cool aviators and brown t-strap sandals for a hippie look! For fashion inspiration, Metrew looks to another blonde bombshell: “Blake Lively is just perfect,” Metrew said. “I love everything about her style!” The stylish freshman also advised readers to “dare and wear something that [they] normally wouldn’t!” Dare to be different!

Swank Zig-zags

“I was just saying how i wanted to be in a street style blog,” freshman biology and psychology major Dylan Weber excitedly said as I approached him. He was right to expect to have his picture taken; his zig-zag bermuda shorts were a show-stopper! “I think I have a really classic American style,” Weber told CGM. “I’m a huge fan of the classic nantucket style, so i try to do a really modern twist on that.” When asked for fashion advice, Weber said this: “Fashion is universal, but style is really individual. Always dress for your body type, dress for the season and go with what makes you comfortable.”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: shorts, oxfords, sunglasses

Vintage Flair

Senior magazine journalism major Joanna Demkiewics bases her style off of comfort. “My trousers are definitely the most comfortable thing,” Demkiewics said. “I got these from Urban Outfitters and they are literally like wearing sweat pants. I feel that way too wearing dresses and outflowing skirts. I think it’s so sweet when people are like ‘oh you look so cute’ and really you just throw it on!” Demkiewics also finds it important to finds stylish pieces for a bargain: “I’m really cheap, so at Maude Vintage I usually trade in clothes that I’m kind of sick of and I do a trade. You can find some gems there!”

Mizzou's Got Style: Cute-n-Classy, Keeping it Clean and Preppy Punk

Missing campus and your friends already? We've got your weekly dose of campus fashion to fill your Mizzou void! So break out your sunnies, and check out who we caught being fabulous last week (and dishing out the best style advice).

Cute-n-Classy

Sophomore textile and apparel management major, Hannah Burnett proves she is nothing less than a determined fashion student in her day to day style. She described her style as classy, and she channels her inner Jackie O and Victoria Beckham when putting an ensemble together. Missouri isn’t exactly a fashion capital, so Burnett had this advice for students who are too afraid to express themselves artistically at Mizzou: “Just because you see people in North Face, leggings and Uggs [doesn’t mean] you have to do that. Since we’re in Missouri, some people kind of hold back, and I’m like, you can never be too dressed up or too out there! If you want to get all dressed up for class, do it!”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: skirt, boots

Keeping it Clean

When we spotted freshman business major Connor Wilson in the hallway, we had to take his picture! Not only was this preppy ensemble perfect for our blog, but he proved to us that his clothing was one of a kind! “[My] shirt was designed and made by my dad when he was in college in the 70s,” Wilson said. When it comes to fashion inspiration, Barney Stinson and Hunter S. Thompson act as his style muses. However, he was reluctant to tell us how Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl inspires many of his ensembles (we here at CGM see no shame in being inspired by the dapper character!). When asked for fashion advice, Wilson gave these tips: “Dressing well makes you look older, successful and more professional. Don't be afraid to wear something a little more flashy though; you tend to get a hell of a lot more compliments! Also, you can never go wrong with some boat shoes, non-cargo pants and a button-up shirt!”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: shirt, pants, shoes

Preppy Punk

“I prefer dressing casual, [yet] stylish,” senior business major Wanyen Chee said. Chee also shared with us her love for mixing punk aspects into her ensembles -- explained by the adorable spiked booties she rocked with this outfit. This stylish business major searches for fashionable pieces online and uses online store lookbooks for inspiration! Chee loves the fact that weather is starting to get warmer and advised us to wear contrasting colors and to “go bright during the spring!”

Mizzou's Got Style: Retrospect, Simple Sophistication & Charmed

Preppy, classic and edgy styles were all on display this week on the campus catwalk. And CGM caught up with these three stylish women who are unafraid to express themselves through their fabulous fashion!

Retrospect

It’s no doubt that freshman philosophy major Abigail English has a knack for old school fashion. “I love 80s and 90s style,” English said. “A lot of my clothes are ‘throwback’ pieces.” This stylish freshman loves to experiment with unique styles and looks to Iggy Azalea and Lil Debbie for risk-taking inspiration. English is fervent in expressing her personality and does so through the art of fashion: “Your style is an extension of who you are. It's how you present yourself to the world. When you put something together, think about what you want to say with your look. In my book, what you wear is just as important as what you say and how you act. I think it's important to have fun with what you wear; try unexpected combinations of patterns, textures or fit!”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: necklace, T-shirt, jacket, leggings, shoes

Simple Sophistication

You can never go wrong with all black. Junior journalism major Elisa Lopez paired a chic coat with sheer black tights, adorable booties and a fab bag for a classy look! “I'm from Spain, so I mainly follow European icons like Kate Moss, Diane Kruger and Blanca Suarez,” Lopez said about her fashion inspiration. “From the U.S., I love Olivia Palermo's style.” When looking for a simple solution to make an outfit pop, Lopez turns to jewelry and specific detailing on clothing: “Necklaces can change your outfit completely and give you a really chic look, and open backs on dresses are my favorite!”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: coat, bag, booties

Charmed

Sophomore interdisciplinary studies major Laura Mikytuck put on a charming display of school-girl attire last week. She paired a classic button-down with a gold brooch and preppy cardigan, then topped off the outfit with to-die-for leopard penny loafers. Mikytuck describes her overall style as “classy and edgy,” which is perfectly represented in this look! This fashionista loves to experiment with clothing and advised us to wear whatever we please. “Something weird I find is when girls say something like, ‘Oh, that looks so good on you. I wish I could pull that off,’ and I'm just like, you can!” Mikytuck said. “There's no secret to pulling any article of clothing off ... if you like it, then wear it!”

Mizzou's Got Style: Aiming for Argyle, Haute Waists and Artistic Accessories

This week brought three more unique Tigers to our attention on the campus catwalk. See what these fashionable students rocked during the final chilly days of February.

Aiming for Argyle

The chic men’s attire of GQ Magazine plays as the stylistic muse of this freshman broadcast journalism major. Brian Cooper didn’t hesitate to take that inspiration and make argyle look awesome. His dark colors contrasted with his neutral shoes perfectly, making for a preppy, clean-cut outfit. When asked for fashion advice, Cooper said, “Just being yourself is the most important factor with style. Never care what other people think as long as you're feeling it.”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: sweater, jacket, shoes

Haute Waists

The night before Javia Gulliam, freshman international business major, put on this ensemble, she watched “The Secret Life of Bees” and became inspired by June Boatwright’s high-waist jeans and crisp white T-shirt. Gulliam, of course, added her own edge to the outfit by pairing it with leopard print accessories and a warm knit cardigan. “I don’t think I fall into a category,” Gulliam said about her style. She marches to the beat of her own fashionable drum and avoids following trends, like the true creative soul she is.

Statement Pieces on a Budget: scarf, pants, loafers

Artistic Accessories

Meet Nathan Coffing, a stylish, freshman journalism major who loves to travel. “My favorite accessory came from Paris,” Coffing said in regards to a vintage moon-faced pendant he was wearing. Retro, James Dean-esque pieces and antique accessories rule his wardrobe. When asked how he puts a great ensemble together, Coffing clued us into one of his major style rules: “Know what your color coordination is going to be when you’re getting dressed, and never mix blacks and browns!”

Mizzou's Got Style: Making a Statement, Fabulous Knits and Swagtastic Stripes

Even piles of snow couldn't keep fashionable students from hitting the campus in style. Look who we caught strutting their stuff...

Making a Statement

According to freshman pre-nursing major, Marcus Thurmond, “When you find the perfect piece at a thrift [shop], it will never compare to something you can buy commercially.” However, when he is not on an excursion for vintage finds, he browses through Akira’s online store, a Chicago-based company of which he is a fabulous stylist for. His convictions and beliefs also play a huge part in his shopping decisions. “I try not to shop at Urban Outfitters anymore because the CEO (ironically) does not agree with the queer lifestyle and supports anti-gay organizations,” Thurmond said. We’d love to run into this inspiring student again to see what he’s wearing next!

Statement Pieces on a Budget: scarf, jeans, boots

Fabulous Knits

Senior strategic communications major Kelly Liao definitely knows how to stay warm and look fabulous doing it. This sweater, along with many of her other adorable pieces, can be found at ASOS. Liao describes her usual style as a strange mix between the grunge “boyfriend” look and sophistication. “I look up to many famous women on Instagram and Pinterest,” Liao said when describing where she gets inspiration for her style.

Statement Pieces on a Budget: sweater, leggings, flats

Swagtastic Stripes

“I would define my style as a subtle interpretation of the mid 90s,” said freshman magazine writing and editing major Keenan Adams about his genuine sense of fashion. “ I enjoy pairing modern preppy pieces with patterned vintage items.” When asked for fashion advice, Adams channeled legendary designer Alexander Wang: “Number one rule in my book: Always keep it classy. Even on off days, make sure you’re looking presentable. Even a T-shirt can be dressed up with a nice watch and sleek shoes. As Alexander Wang so rightly stated, 'Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.'”

Mizzou's Got Style: Poetic Justice, Loud & Proud and Charming Simplicity

CGM columnist Candice Brew caught some stylish students on campus last week. Check out our favorites!

Poetic Justice

Freshman journalism major Briana Arps seemed to pay homage to 90s film "Poetic Justice" with her trendy retro blouse and senegalese twists -- similar to the legendary box braids Janet Jackson rocked in the movie. Though this fabulous ensemble embodies retro at its best, Arp’s style is defined by a fashionable persona she has created. “‘Young Rebella’ is edgy and chic,” the creative freshman said about her artistic persona. She also had this to say about fashion as a whole: “Don’t be afraid to experiment because our culture is always changing. You never know what is next.”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: turban, top, shorts

Loud & Proud

You would be mistaken to think that this international business major was not all about making a statement. “I dress fiercely, and I stand out in a crowd,” freshman Andrew O’Haro said about his daring style. “That's how I like it!” When wearing loud statement pieces, like the leopard print pants he snagged from Maude Vintage, O’Haro advised to keep everything else simple: “In my outfit, I'm wearing some crazy loud leopard print pants. I mean these babies could stop a train. So, because they're so eye-catching ... my outfit was intricate enough to not require an accessory.”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: cardigan, pants, boots

Charming Simplicity

“I add edge to all of my outfits,” senior journalism major Nathalie Granda said. This can obviously be proven by the golden cross pendant and edgy biker jacket she added to an otherwise simple but cute outfit. Top Shop and Urban Outfitters rank as Granda’s top spots to find trendy pieces and accessories. When prompted on how to add a little pizazz to an ensemble, Granda clued us in on her secret: “You can always dress up an outfit with jewelry.” Granda had a point. Like I always say, accessories make an outfit!

Mizzou's Got Style: Adorable & Affordable, Perfectly Preppy and Genuinely Grunge

You didn't have to be at New York Fashion Week to catch incredible style last week. Check out who we caught on the campus catwalk!

Adorable and Affordable

It is no doubt that sophomore animal science major Carlie Priddy can find adorable clothing without splurging. She loves to raid the racks of Forever 21 and Target: “The cheaper the better,” Priddy said. Besides always searching for the best deal, this fashionista won’t compromise comfort for style: “I also don’t buy anything unless it’s comfortable,” she commented. Priddy also shared with us a bit about her style preference: “I like vintage and dresses.”

Statement Pieces on a Budget: cardigan, skirt, boots

Perfectly Preppy

Meet John Mcdonnell. He is a stylish freshman with contemporary and urban tastes. “Always tuck in your shirt, and wear a belt,” Mcdonnell advised when asked for his tips on achieving such dapper style. Macy’s and thrift stores are included in his list of places to discover fabulous finds.

Statement Pieces on a Budget: coat, belt, boots

Genuinely Grunge

“Casual, tom-boy, hipster, and 90s” are a few words that sophomore music major Hannah Rainey used when describing her unique style. This artistic scholar loves to shop downtown at Maude Vintage and looks to Canadian singer Grimes for fashion inspiration. When prompted for fashion tips, Rainey said this: “Don’t over-accessorize. You should wear one accessory per outfit.”
