Aaron Carter Visits The Blue Note on his After Party Tour

He’s back, ladies. That dreamy 12-year-old heartthrob we all sang along to on our CD players in the car… He’s on tour again, except Aaron Carter is now 25 and on a bit different type of tour. Instead of opening for the Backstreet Boys or being featured on “Lizzie McGuire,” this is the After Party Tour, and the name reflects it well.

Targeting his original audience, this grown-up child star is touring college towns and reconnecting with those girls that grew up having the biggest crushes on him. On May 6, he took his After Party Tour to The Blue Note in Columbia and showed us what we had been missing out on for 10 years.

Granted, after a two-to-three hour wait for the star to come out, he delivered classic favorites like “How I Beat Shaq,” “Iko Iko,” and of course “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” and “I Want Candy,” along with full choreography and two back-up dancers. Aaron also did some impressive gymnastics, like a back tuck and an aerial. Who knew Aaron Carter never lost his touch?

He did a great job of connecting with his fans. On stage in the middle of his set, he asked the merchandising table for 10 shirts, which he continued to autograph and throw out into the crowd. He also took pictures with his audience and posted them as a PicStitch on his Instagram account. Offering two Meet and Greet opportunities for a lucky few, you could take a picture with the star and maybe even get a kiss and a phone number! (He’s been a notorious flirt ever since reappearing on the scene and tour.)

It’s safe to say Aaron Carter is back doing his thing, making a name for himself. The show was a great trip down memory lane, and no one struggled with remembering their favorite lyrics. Aaron will continue to be on tour until December of this year, so check out if he will be coming to a town near you! You won’t want to miss the crazy antics this star has up his sleeves. Because after all, it’s Aaron’s party (so come get it!).

Girly Rants: Great Dress-pectations

As the seasons change and temperatures waiver, obviously our trends do, too. It’s simple math: When the temperatures go up, we shed layers of clothes and expose skin. However, with the changing weather and clothing choices, boy’s expectations of what we should wear change as well.

On those gorgeous sunny days that reach into the 70s, 80s, and dare I say 90s, most girls slip into some comfy Nike shorts (the notorious ‘norts’) and a tank top. I know I’m not just speaking for myself when I say that. Dressing up for class takes a lot of effort and care that I tend to lack while anticipating an 8 a.m. class, or really in general, regardless of the time.

So there we are, all happy and excited about the warm weather and boys playing shirtless football on their front lawns as we walk to class, but here’s the problem: In most of their heads, they’re looking at us and thinking, “Uh… It’s warm out. Why aren’t these girls in pretty little sundresses, booty shorts, tight skirts and low tank tops?”

HA! Well maybe it’s because I’m freaking lazy. Or maybe it’s because I don’t feel the need to get dolled up for class when I’m most likely going to sweat it off and ruin whatever I put together, then I’ll look really great. Or it could be the fact that I don’t want to look like a hooker. Take your pick, gentlemen.

Boys tend to have these ideal outfits they always want girls to wear. When it’s warm outside, they want to see a ton of skin and girly dresses. When it starts to get cooler out, all they want to see are Lulu Lemon yoga pants (hmm… wonder why.) Way to be unpredictable, guys.

In reality, those ideal images they want to see are usually pretty inconvenient to “casually throw together” each day and look perfect. Sorry I like to sleep. I, in no way, shape or form, want to wake up an extra hour early to style my hair, perfect my make-up and coordinate an outfit.

So basically, no matter what the weather, I’m going to be strolling around campus looking like a sloppy mess in my Nike shorts and tank top, but comfortable and well rested. Sorry to disappoint, boys!

Spring Break 2013: We Made It!

Okay, we can admit it. We’ve all been counting down toward spring break. Who wouldn’t? It’s been awhile since winter break, we’ve been on our school grind, and it gets old really fast. We sit in our lecture halls as the professors drone on about something or other, while in our minds, we are frolicking in waves and soaking in the sun. Is it spring break yet?

With that being said, the optimistic thoughts of what break will entail often lead us to forget about the stresses that the last school week has in store for us. Oh yes, it is midterm season, everyone.

Just the other night, one of my friends burst in the front door of our residence hall, disheveled and tired looking, to exclaim that she had spent 12 straight hours at the infamous Club Ellis preparing for four exams that were all stacked together the following day. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.

And lucky me, I had a test Friday before break. What I want to know is what kind of evil, delirious professor plans a big exam the Friday before break. For the people that have to change travel plans (or miss out on them), I have two things to say: 1) I personally find the exam rules ridiculous, and 2) I can’t imagine sitting in that awful, bland room counting down the minutes and thinking about what I’m missing out on. Do those professors have no heart? Or social life?

On top of the exams that professors love to cram in before break, us students have to deal with the hardships of planning the vacation. Being on our own at college, many of us do not have the amenity of parents to lay out and pay for the trips. So the months and weeks before break, when we’re not ready to jump out of a window at the library, are spent scrambling to make some worthy plans come together. Means of transportation, a place to stay, managing the cost, getting people together …the issues go on and on. Trust me, none of it is ever easy.

For those of you who aren’t going anywhere for break, rest up, have some good home-cooked meals, and be thankful you survived the school week before break. Not everyone can say they got away from the week unscathed.

Of course, despite all the stresses and hecticness…..

HAPPY SPRING BREAK, EVERYONE! WE MADE IT!

CGM's Snow Day Scrapbook

The groundhog said spring was right around the corner, but Mother Nature had different plans for CoMo and dumped at least 10-15 inches of the white stuff over the past two weeks. Classes and meetings were canceled, so what was our staff to do but go out and frolick in the snow? Check out our snow day adventures!

CGM staff writer Abby Kass and her friend Cole Lawson are ready for an epic snowball fight at the Columns.

CGM staff writers Audrey Wilcox (left) and Hannah Boxerman (right) braved the cold for a quick pic.

Alise Murawski, CGM columnist, got a lift from a pal. That's what friends are for, right?!

"Girly Rants" columnist Lindsay Keaton had nothing bad to say about standing on top of the world ... er, snow mountain.

Anticipating Sweet Summertime

In light of the recent “Snowpocalypse” and lingering snow banks, I have discovered a new appreciation for the sun, summer and everything that comes along with it. Let’s face it: EVERYTHING, and I mean everything, is better in the summer.

Physically? Yeah, I like being tan and skinnier. In the summer, you don’t even have to try to be tan! You’re outside and poof! it just happens … and I like that. Plus, foods are lighter and healthier, meaning a lazy person’s favorite weapon against weight gain. I miss my fresh fruits, like days where I could inhale an entire watermelon in one sitting. Don’t act like you haven’t done it.

It’s almost like the sun comes out and scares away that extra 10 pounds that I couldn’t shake during the winter. I guess it helps that when it is warm outside, it’s actually fun to be active. Like I said last time, dragging my butt to the gym is not a frequent event by any means, but beach volleyball and swimming don’t feel like the rigorous workouts that make me wary of the Rec.

And don’t forget how good the guys look when playing some casual football in the yard (shirtless). Or slicking their hair back and getting out of the pool (shirtless)…. Or driving around in their trucks with the windows down (shirtless)… Or maybe I’ll get back on topic.

Anyway… summer!

Who doesn’t miss throwing on jean shorts and a tank top or feeling confident in a string bikini? Summer clothes are actually the best. I love the bright colors and skin-baring pieces of the warm months. Our “cozy sweaters” that we were so excited for a few months ago get really old, but a flowy dress or cutoffs and a cute top never seem to.

And of course, you can’t forget that summer means NO SCHOOL, and that means a lot of things: Namely, no worries. No homework. No exams. No essays. Hallelujah, amen, praise the Lord! Nothing sounds better at this moment.

I thought the groundhog predicted early spring this year? Come on buddy, help a sister out here.

The Grammys may be a wrap, but the red carpet fashion lives on. As with most award shows, some stars looked like royalty and some looked straight up off-key. The College Gloss Mizzou team watched every misstep and has a lot to say about what they loved and hated about the fashion on music's biggest night. (Somebody get Taylor's stylist on the phone!)

Top 5 Best Dressed

Rihanna

“Rihanna is not always my favorite, but I have to admit that I loved her style last night. She looked so elegant in red, and her hair was perfection.”  -Abby Kass

“Lady in red. Rihanna was the definition of glamorous in this flowing crimson gown. Her bold red lips and nails complemented her ensemble without overdoing it.” -Candice Brew

Carrie Underwood

“Carrie looked amazing in the dress. It fit her perfectly and was interesting, but at the same time showed off that amazing diamond necklace.” -Abby Kass

Katy Perry

“Some people might hate this, but I think it’s simplistically beautiful, and also Katy is my spirit animal so...” -Alise Murawski

"Gucci at the Grammys. What more needs to be said?" -Kayla Elam

Justin Timberlake

“Simple, yet so stylish and classy. Men can’t go wrong with that look.” -Abby Kass

Top 5 Worst Dressed

Adele

“I’m all for Adele getting past her all black stage, but wearing a rug isn’t an improvement.” -Cheyenne Roundtree

Florence Welch

“She looks like some kind of ginger reptile. Godzilla in America.” -Luria Freeman

Jennifer Lopez

“Sad but true. That bun does not belong at the Grammys, and the weird crotch on her dress ... just no.” -Luria Freeman

"Angelina Jolie already did the high slit, leg pose. Sorry J. Lo, try again!" -Lindsay Keaton

Taylor Swift

“I feel like I’ve seen this before from her ... branch out a little T-Swizzle!” -Alise Murawski

John Mayer

“Not feeling the velvet blue jacket and the blue bowtie that doesn’t really match.” -Abby Kass

The stars should never fear, though, because the next few weeks will bring more award shows with new fashion for us to gossip and drool over. We'll be watching.

Premature Pressures: Looking Forward to Spring Break

As soon as everyone returned to campus after a long winter break filled with extensive holiday dinners (and of course, desserts), the one thing on people’s minds is the inevitable: spring break. Following that train of thought, the anxiety to get bikini-ready bodies is setting in. With T-minus 44 days and counting, I look at these crazy girls already hitting the gym and working their butts off with amazement.

Are you guys insane? I don’t want to diet and workout! As a guilty procrastinator, as I would expect most college students to be, why the hell are you working on this two months early?! Sorry ladies, enjoy your celery and water, but I want Buffalo Wild Wings so I’m going to get it. We’re young! Why not take advantage of the metabolism while we can?

I have an already fit-and-healthy friend who bought Insanity, an $80 cardio DVD program, over break. Let’s stop there … Insanity? It already sounds way too intense for me. She got a set of 12 DVDs that have various one-hour workouts. The promise? Keep up with the workouts for 60 days, and you’ll get the perfect, toned body. Yeah, ooookay. Who in their right mind can keep up with that for two months? That takes a whole lot of determination and sacrifice that I just can’t handle. Especially with this cold, dreary weather, who wants to get up from their comfy bed and feel the burn? To quote one of my favorite trainers, Fat Amy, “Yeah, don’t put me down for cardio...” I’ll stick to that horizontal running.

So ladies, I’ll leave you with this: If you’re already on your spring break workout grind, kudos to you. You’re far more determined than my lazy ass.

If you’re one of those girls that attempts but seems to always get distracted or slip up, it’s okay! You’re in the majority. You’re still going to have a blast on vacation and a smile is the most attractive thing you can wear. For inspiration, check out College Gloss's workout essentials and makeup products for the gym.

And for my fellow bums, I haven’t forgotten about you. Feel comfortable in your own skin, and don’t let the stress of a Victoria’s Secret body upset you or change your lifestyle.

Mizzou Mythbusters: Jones Hall Water

CG Mizzou columnist Lindsay Keaton, resident of Jones Residence Hall, investigates the water in Jones and offers her solution.

I’d been hearing the infamous rumor since day one: Jones water causes acne.

I went out to Hy-Vee and bought a 2-gallon dispenser of water. If I don’t drink the water, then I won’t break out, right? Wrong.

More rumors swirled that it was the water in the showers, not the drinking fountains. Since everyone seemed to be a little confused, I decided to get to the bottom of this myth.

First, I went to my neighbors in Jones Hall.

Haley Holt, MU freshman and Jones Hall resident, agreed with the rumors, stating: “I never used to break out, and now I’m getting blemishes. I’ve heard it’s because of the water here.”

Kristen Carver, Jones Hall’s student president for floors eight and nine, also said: “I’ve never had acne before, and now I’m getting it a lot. I’ve been avoiding the drinking fountains, but I’m still breaking out.”

When both girls were asked how they think these problems can be fixed, their answers were simple: filter and purify the water.

It was obvious that the residents were all buying into the rumor, but I wanted to dig a little deeper.

Throughout my investigation, people kept correcting me: No, it’s Columbia water in general, not just Jones Hall. What was the truth? I decided to look into both possibilities.

With the Jones Hall coordinator unavailable for an interview, I was left on my own to research and find out for myself.

The City of Columbia, Missouri’s official website has an in-depth report on 2011’s water quality. It provides complete water testing results thorough descriptions of water sources used and the way the tests were administered. More than 4,000 tests are completed at 41 locations throughout Columbia to ensure quality water, which are more than required by law. This proves that the town is paying attention to the water. Okay, so it’s safe to drink … but what about our skin?

My research led me to one answer: water softener. The two types of water, hard and soft, depend on the minerals within it. Hard water has many different dissolved minerals, whereas soft water is treated so that the only mineral in it is sodium. Most modern homes have water softener systems set up to the septic tank in order to filter the water.

What I believe that is going on with Jones Hall water is that it either doesn’t contain a water softener or the water isn’t treated as much as we’re used to at our houses. This means more minerals are interacting with our skin and hair, causing it to break out or change. Our skin will adapt to these changes and soon calm down, but for now, to beat the Jones water curse, try clarifying shampoo.

How to Maintain Your Tan Through the Winter Months

Now that the cold weather has set in, our crucial sun time is disappearing altogether. What used to be casual afternoons lounging by the pool and soaking up rays now consists of us shivering under a pile of blankets in our beds. The biggest obstacle to overcome in the winter: avoiding the inevitable ghostly paleness. So how can we maintain our healthy bronze glows?

Bronzer:
Most people want the year-round tan but refuse to put their skin via any fake tanning, whether it be sprayed on or baked on. A quick fix for that would be any pale girl’s best friend and beauty secret: bronzer. A swipe down our T-zone, and we look like we just spent the weekend in Hawaii. It is completely harmless, but also temporary. Some of the best-reviewed bronzers are bareMinerals’ Warmth All-Over Face Color, available for $19. Readers on TotalBeauty.com reviewed this product, agreeing: “It looks natural, stays on my face all day, and doesn’t clog my pores.” For a cheaper bronzer that doesn’t slack on quality, try E.L.F’s $3 bronzer available at all major drugstores.

Bronzing Lotion:
For an all-over glow, bronzing lotion may be the answer! Trusted brand L’Oreal has a great self tanning lotion for between $8-10. You just rub the tinted lotion on like any other lotion, and it creates an even, natural-looking tan. Other bronzing lotions such as St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Self Tan Bronzing Lotion (featured in Elle magazine) and Clarin’s Self-Tanning Instant Gel prove to be equally as raved about, but much pricier, around the $30 range. Much like bronzing powder, bronzing lotion is completely healthy for skin and poses no risk of wrinkles or cancer in the future, but is also pretty temporary and washes off in a shower. Consider this another effective, quick fix!

Spray Tan:
Ah, the notorious spray tan. We’ve all heard the horror stories of them ending up bright orange or streaky at the most inconvenient times. Spray tans are not something to fear, just something to be cautionary of! Spray tans are harmless to our skin and complexions, so the only thing to worry about is not over-doing it. I’ve been warned that getting a technician to spray you themselves, instead of going into an automatic booth, tends to be less risky.

Women’s Health Magazine has steps to achieving the perfect spray tan.

1. Test out the color on a small patch of skin before committing to it on your entire body.

2. Prep your body. Make sure to shave/wax any unwanted hair and exfoliate your skin with an oil-free body scrub. Don’t use lotion, as it can block the tan from coloring your skin.

3. Go naked! You don’t want any tan lines. Bring dark, loose-fitting clothes and flip flops to wear out of the salon. Tight clothes will make the color streak and light colors will get stained!

4. Stand still, close your eyes, hold your breath, and don’t worry! Machines and employees will leave no room for error.

5. Avoid showering until 6-8 hours later, or even until the next morning. No sweating or swimming while your tan is developing!

6. Allow your first spray tan to fade off evenly before getting another one or messing with it.

Tanning Bed:
The tanning bed’s potential threat of cancer and/or wrinkles in the future scares many people away, but for those it doesn’t scare off, it acts as a very quick and effective solution. The different types and strengths of tanning beds can intimidate anyone, but it is usually up to personal preference and comfort. To prevent a tanning bed burn, you want a bed with a high amount of bronzing bulbs and a low amount of reddening bulbs. Also, if you haven’t tanned on a bed before or not recently, start out slow and don’t push yourself. You have to work yourself up to a high amount of time. I personally recommend buying a week so you have time to build up the tan slowly.

Tanning lotions will also be available at the salons, whether you want to buy a one-time-use packet or a bottle. They are extremely pricey in the salon; a packet can go for $5-15, and a bottle can go from $25-100. What I have found helpful is that bottles are available on Amazon.com for a fraction of the salon cost. In the past I’ve used a lotion called Primal Instinct by Australian Gold, usually about $40 in the salon, but Amazon has it available for less than $20. Also JWoww’s famous Black Bronzer Dark Tanning Lotion is available on Amazon for $14.47!

In Columbia, we have a number of tanning salons that offer both spray tans and tanning beds. Pacific Beach Tan is located in downtown CoMo, offers a wide range of beds and packages and also spray tanning. They have many specials available on their website, especially for students. Another popular tanning salon near campus is Magictan Studios on Elm Street, also offering both spray tans and beds. They have three different level beds to choose from: level 1, 2 and 3. As you go up in the levels, your time in the bed gets shorter, but the power of the bed increases. The Tan Company is another great option if you want a sunless glow, sprayed on or from a bed.

TigerX Diaries: Your Guide to MizzouRec's Fitness Classes

Welcome to your complete guide to the Rec Center’s famous TigerX classes. This is your personal sneak peek into all the most popular workout classes offered at Mizzou, without ever having to leave the comfort of your bed.

Zumba
Difficulty level: **
Arguably one of the most popular Tiger X classes, Zumba never fails to fill the studios. This class is a cardio dance class featuring various popular songs that you’re guaranteed to recognize. It is a great way to get your heart rate up, break a sweat, but also have fun with your friends. Although not a very rigorous workout, it keeps you active and moving. The best part? You now have a ton of hot, new dance moves to try at parties!

Power
Difficulty level: *****
If you’re trying this class, good luck—it’s an ambitious feat. This class is notoriously known around the Rec as quite the challenge, so of course I had to try it out myself. I consider myself a pretty athletic person; I play Club Sports and stay in shape, so I wasn’t too intimidated going to this class. It only took me 15 minutes into the class to be full-blown drenched in sweat, straining my breath, feeling the soreness set in. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great, thorough workout, and I loved that satisfying soreness that proves you did a good job. This class is the fast track way to kicking your ass into shape.

Hip Hop
Difficulty level: **
This class is very similar to Zumba, so if you really love the dance classes, this is another one to add to your to-do list. I consider it a light workout, where your heart gets pumping and you break a sweat, but is not super challenging. It’s fun to try with your friends or bring a guy to try it with you for some extra humor. This class isn’t just for girls!

Tiger Tease
Difficulty level: *
This class teaches you a fun and sexy step-by-step dance throughout the course of the 50 minutes, ultimately leading to a full routine to be performed in groups in front of the class. It is supposed to be a strip tease class, or that’s how it was described to me, but it was more like a Zumba or hip-hop routine with a few more flirty moves. The fact that it is a step-by-step instructional class takes away from the hard workout, but not the fun.

Knockout
Difficulty level: ****
Knockout really surprised me. I went into this class expecting just an okay time and a decent workout. Not only was I sweating and feeling “the burn” of a good workout, but it was really fun. It is the perfect way to get any stress out, whether it be from that final you were cramming for, drama from a boyfriend or just plain tension from the week. An important mental note: bring wrap for your hands. It hurt my knuckles to punch the bag without them and really took away from the workout. (I was told you can get little punching gloves at Walmart for less than five bucks!) Definitely worth it.

Abs and Glutes
Difficulty level: ***
This class proved to be a good workout, bringing pain to muscles I didn’t even know I had. We did lots of reps of various exercises, but this is not a cardio class at all. It’s rather a sculpting class. Lots of different equipment is used to vary the workout, but overall it’s just a good, hard exercise to work and tone your muscles. If you’re in a time crunch, try Abs and Glutes Xpress, a shortened 30-minute workout class of the same routines. Warning: You will feel it in the morning!

Pump
Difficulty level: ****
Pump was, in my opinion, the most well-rounded workout. It touched on all types of exercises, starting off with a cardio warm-up, then diving into the strength and conditioning. We worked on arms, core and legs/glutes thoroughly, but what I liked most was the originality of the exercises we did. A lot of them were things I had never seen or tried before, making the class exciting and fresh. Even if you don’t have time to go every week, this class gives you great ideas of new things to spice up your workouts.

MizzouRec also offers a variety of yoga, Pilates and cycling classes for TigerX pass holders.

Need a study break? Head to the Rec to try out some of these amazing classes. You can find the finals schedule here: MizzouRec.
