Dealing With Labels

Brian Johnson: Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...

Andrew Clark: ...and an athlete...
Allison Reynolds: ...and a basket case...
Claire Standish: ...a princess...
John Bender: ...and a criminal...
Brian Johnson: Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

--"The Breakfast Club"

What made this movie infamous? How do labels attract the audience? Do labels really matter?

Each character in "The Breakfast Club" is different from the other, yet they are forced to be in detention together. Each of them have different personalities, world views and backgrounds. It seems like they would not get along with each other during detention, but surprisingly, they do.

Everyone is known by their names and labels (populars, jocks, nerds, etc.). They didn’t know each story to each person. They relied on their first impressions of each other. Later in the movie, they warmed up to each other. The experiences, peer pressure and dreams made the characters quite similar.

This can apply to reality and the people you meet in college. It’s not a bad thing to have a first impression of someone. It’s part of our human nature to identify others. The hardest part about labels is that they don't always define who we are. We are defined by many things. Labels do matter on the outside, as well as to our character.

That’s how "The Breakfast Club" got together because they got to know one another. They shared their experiences and allowed each other to learn about who they are. This made them better people.

Create your own identity, and be comfortable with it. Just continue to be the best you can be.

How to Understand and Embrace Change

“Sometimes, there are things in our life that aren’t meant to stay. Sometimes, change may not be what we want. Sometimes, change is exactly what we need. And sometimes, saying goodbye is the hardest thing you think you’ll never have to do, but sometimes, saying hello again is the thing that breaks you down and makes you more vulnerable than you ever thought possible. Sometimes, change is too much to bear. But most of the time, change is the only thing saving your life.” -Unknown

Sometimes, we ask ourselves: What is a change? Why do we need it? Why does it even exist?

Life is all about choices. Every second of the day we make choices about what we do and how we act. We decide to change our fashion trends, hair color and even our nail color. We learn about ourselves through stages of life by figuring out what we do and don't like.

We also learn in the face of bigger things like family, friends and ourselves. This can come from the environment, work and every situation we go through. It all comes in a package. We make choices to face these situations. It can be amazing, painful or even both.

We often think changes are too much to bear. We think that we should forget the past and focus on the future. Honestly, we are growing and maturing. Our past choice made us who we are, and the present is about focusing on who we want to be. It’s hard holding on to the things that are important to us, but it’s time to let it go. We should be grateful for what we learned.

Life is all about what we make it. Create our own brands, and be well known in the world. No one is watching you, just do right for yourself. Feel what is right, and do what is best for you. We are no better or no worse than the people around us. We can be unique in our own ways, and allow ourselves  to learn from others.

So, we wouldn’t want a day like in “Groundhog Day,” going through the same routines over and over again. That would be super boring. Nothing will ever be the same. Don’t let changes negatively affect your life, and grab the chances that are in front of you. Make things count. Everybody matters, so don’t settle for less than you deserve.

We are constantly learning. Mistakes do not define us, but they make us better people. No matter how much or how less we do, we will always learn something new. Embrace change and make life exciting.
