CGM's Exclusive Interview with Phillip "DJ Homicide" Owens

The beginning of the 2013 school year was marked by a celebration with the presence of popular entertainer Phillip “DJ Homicide” Owens. DJ Homicide has been involved in more than 50 events on campus, ranging from themed parties, cookouts, talent shows, probates, pageants and benefits, all of which have had large turnouts (approximately 2,500 guests at his 2009 Homecoming Bash) and have been the recipients of rave reviews from numerous attendees.

DJ Homicide sat down with CGM's Brianna Arps to discuss what he had in store for MU Tigers this fall, specifically "Project Zou 2," the sequel to fall 2012's premier occasion.

For those who are unaware, explain the motive behind “Project Zou.”
DJH: Because the guys from HUE (also known as Hands Up Entertainment, the promotions team behind many favorable events hosted at Mizzou) were set to graduate, I took it upon myself to do something memorable and on a much larger scale. The motive behind “Project Zou” came from the movie “Project X,” where three high school seniors threw the most outrageous party in the history of parties.

I noticed that on this year’s flyer, there seems to be a host of individuals involved in the “Project Zou 2” production. Explain the process of planning/branding and what party-goers can look forward to upon arrival.
DJH: I have multiple hosts on this year’s flyer to bring out as many people as possible. Last year, we had students from as far as Purdue and Tennessee State University show up, and we are looking to have another big turnout. For those students that stay on-campus, they can look forward to free transportation, but everyone can look forward to a night of good dance music and a chance to meet their peers. My whole branding process is much more different: I choose to focus on the quality of an event rather than the quantity of events I produce. Unfortunately, this means that there will be less events that I produce at Mizzou this year.

Why should incoming students, freshmen in particular, make it a priority to attend “Project Zou 2” on Aug. 23?
DJH: Freshmen are the most important class when it comes to collegiate parties because they have not yet gotten to experience a true sense of independence. Also, they are more eager to go out than upperclassmen who can go out to a bar any day of the week.

Could you spare giving readers a few deets on any of your other upcoming projects and where they can go to remain updated?
DJH: My company Tru Entertainment Group is involved with the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. to throw another event together on August 24. “TRU NIGHT OWT” will be held in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at 9 p.m. Also, Tru Entertainment Group plans on having my third annual breast cancer awareness party soon. All proceeds from the event will go to the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, Mo. Also, throughout the fall, I will be working with other organizations both on and off-campus. Since I disk jockey all over the Midwest, I love meeting new people and getting paid to party. People can stay updated by following me on Instagram and Twitter @thebestdamndj.

Did you attend "Project Zou 2" this fall? Share your experience in the comments below.

A Look into Reality TV

The TV scene has been taken over by show after show of a reality we all know was edited. Let’s see how much sense that makes. None. Reality TV has really taken over the networks as it gets almost just as many views as news broadcastings and informational networks. Even networks such as TLC (The Learning Channel) have switched over. The only thing we really learn from it now is how Honey Boo Boo gets her kicks everyday.

The very first reality show aired in 1973. According to the Writer’s Guild of America, “An American Family,” a 12-episode documentary following the Loud family, was the break of something amazing for the TV world. Then came the more known “The Real World,” “Survivor” and “Big Brother.” These shows really went deep into the reality world, showing all the ins, outs and breaking points of everyday people. Yet, they are so unrealistic and almost unbelievable. At the beginning, the concept of “The Real World” was great, especially for college-aged viewers beginning to experience just that, the real world. Sadly as it grew with popularity and seasons continued, the reality factor became less and less prevalent. It is almost interesting how quickly TV show producers took advantage of their power to really alter reality. Honestly, we are all living life; we know the difference between real and fake.

Now in this day in age, where does TV really stand? Why is it so addicting? Rather than just debate the point, Psychology Today conducted a survey of 239 people with the Reiss Profile, asking them about their television viewing habits and their values. It was concluded that the most common reasons were that they watch in order to talk with friends and coworkers about the show and that they are not as smart as other viewers. That’s almost funny. Americans watch shows that promote brain inactivity because they don’t think their brain is active enough. This is the point where all college students can rejoice for consistently juicing their brains.

The fine line of integrity and entertainment is always the breaking point for reality TV. It is quite obvious that this category of television isn’t going anywhere … at least not anytime soon. Just be sure not to be bamboozled by the fancy scripts and dim lights. Keep your eyes open for the bit of extraordinary in the everyday life.

Is Miley Cyrus For Real?: A Look At Her New Album Bangerz

I will admit to you that I was a fan of Miley Cyrus once. I was on that Hannah Montana bandwagon and even saw them “together” in concert. This is not one of my proudest moments, but I am being honest.

I feel like we have been watching Miley slowly go insane. She says that she is under a lot of pressure and just wants to be a teenager and experiment, but really? Cutting off all your hair, wearing no clothes and dancing inappropriately on TV? That is how you want to be yourself? Maybe taking a step back from the spotlight and taking some time for yourself would be a better idea. Take a vacation to an exotic island ... that is always exciting. Turn off your phone, email and everything and just lay on the beach. And please grow your hair back. I would pay money to have that hair. And I know I am not alone when I say that.

When Miley hosted SNL, I did not get to watch the whole episode, but I watched the highlights. Throughout the show I could not help but question if she was really serious about how she acts. She was all for making fun of herself, which is great. So is that why she's doing this? Is she just acting and then going to come out in a month and fool us all? I kind of hope so, but until then we are left we the horrible wrecking ball video. But for every bad music video, there are at least five parodies that make up for it. This one is my favorite for "Wrecking Ball". It is a combined with Mumford and Son's "Little Lion Man and is really good. Check it out below.

Well, Miley’s new album is out, and now it is time to see what she has been spending so much time on. Here are my reactions and thoughts my first time hearing the songs:

Adore
This song is very slow. I would assume that she is talking about Liam. I think this song is putting me to sleep .... zzz ... Oh yeah, it did. Sorry.

Bangerz
How many times can she say bangers?

4x4
This song kind of has a country twang to it. “Driving so fast, ‘bout to piss myself?” Really Miley, is that necessary? That’s a little distrubing. And could you repeat “Round and round and away we go” anymore? I get that you are a female rebel, but you don’t need to spend three minutes telling me this. And now I think I will have that some stuck in my head for that next week. Thanks.

My Darling
I don’t really have any comments about this song. Again, I just feel like she says the same thing over and over again. “My darling, stand by me.” Ok, we get it ... Liam left you, but it is time to move on.

Wrecking Ball
Ok, truth is, I really like this song. I am a fan of songs that start off soft and then build. I think this is my favorite song on the album. It is just so catchy and powerful. If only I could get the music video out of my head. I do really enjoy this mashup of wrecking ball and “Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons. Plus the dancing in the video is great, and I did not see an actual wrecking ball anywhere.

Love Money Party
I think the title of this song tells it all. There really is nothing else to life, right? I do feel like this is a good song to play at a party. It has a good beat to it and would be fun to dance to. But when you listen to it at nine in the morning, that’s a different story. Again, I think “Love, Money, Party” will be stuck in my head now.

#GETITRIGHT
This song seemed a little too personal for me. I’m pretty sure Miley is talking about the first time “in bed” with someone. It is very descriptive. And do you really have to use a hashtag in the title? Really? It does again have a catchy melody, I just think it is way to personal, and I feel like I know way more about Miley than I should.

Drive
I think that Miley is actually singing in this song, which is good. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this song. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love. It is just kind of average for me.

FU
Well, this song is clearly about Liam. And I can tell that in the first 10 seconds. I feel like Miley is a little bitter about this breakup. “You’re not even worth this rhyme.” Then why did you write a whole song, wait, whole album about him?

Do My Thang
I’m pretty sure this is Miley’s anthm. She is basically telling everyone that she does not care and will do what she wants. In the song, she tells me not to worry, but just listening to the song makes me worry. And the fact that she tries to rap but does so really slowly is concerning. I just don’t know. And being the grammar freak that I am, the fact that she spells “thing” “thang” just does not sit right with me.

Maybe You’re Right
I take back that grammar comment from the last song because she uses the right form of “you’re’’ in this song. And the fact that she says, “You may think I’m crazy” really makes me think that she knows that she is out of control. Again, I think this album should be titled, “This is for Liam Hemsworth.” It would just make things a little clearer. I do like the soulful Miley better than rapping Miley.

Someone Else
Ok, now we know that Liam took her heart. Maybe that’s the problem? She does not have a heart anymore, which is why she is acting the way she is? So, the solution to the problem is to follow the yellow brick road and get her heart back from the wizard. Maybe that will work? I do agree with her when she says, “I’ve turned into someone else.” And can we be a little more cliche with the quote from Corinthians about how love is patient? I just don’t really think that fits well. Sorry, Miley.

Rooting For My Baby
Again, another song about Liam. Is there a trend here or something? This was not my favorite song. I found it kind of depressing. Compared to all of the other song on the album, I think that this one is a dud.

On My Own
This song had a bit of an 80s vibe to it. I think Miley is trying to assure us that she is okay on her own, but by the looks of the other songs on this album, I’m not so sure.

Hands in the Air
This is another party song. Nothing really all that special about it.

So, there you have it. That’s Miley’s album for you. I have to say, personally, I was not that impressed. Miley could have done better. There are some nice party songs, and I like “Wrecking Ball,” but other than that, I could pass on the album. It can clearly be seen that she isn’t over Liam yet. She seems like she is just putting on a show now. I wonder what she will do next.

Get to Know Youngblood Hawke for MU's 2013 Homecoming Concert

Every year, Homecoming features a spirit rally and concert the Friday before the game. Last year, not well known at the time, Imagine Dragons, performed. This year, the band Youngblood Hawke is performing. The concert, along with the spirit rally, is October 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. It will take place on Rollins outside of the Student Center. If you have never heard of the band before, here is a little history of the band, plus a look at some of their best music.

Youngblood Hawke came together in 2011, after two members, Simon Katz and Sam Martin, decided to abandon their duo and bring in three other members to form a band. The band worked all summer long writing songs. The name for the band came from the title of a book by Herman Wouk.

They released their first EP with five songs last August and recently released their first album. According to the band's website, the band features music that has elements of pop, rock, indie, dance and even some hip hop.

"We Come Running," was the first single by the band. The song is about not letting your fears or obstacles get in the way of your dreams. It made the Billboard Top 10 in November 2012 and was featured on the soundtrack for FIFA 13.

Here are a couple other videos of Youngblood Hawke's music that will get you ready for the concert.

Plus, check out this interview with the band.

You can download the first album from Youngblood Hawke on iTunes now and get ready for them to perform for Homecoming. Imagine Dragons became really famous after they performed at Mizzou ... so who know, maybe these guys will be the next big thing.

"Pretty Little Liars" Style Steal: Aria Montgomery

If I had to describe Aria Montgomery’s style, I would say it was eclectic, unexpected and just plain weird. However, that being said there’s something intriguing about the way this liar dresses, and I’m going to try to help you steal her style.

As I said before, Aria’s style is kind of unexpected, so it’s difficult to pick staple pieces. Instead, I’m going to get you started by picking out an outfit I think fits Aria’s unique standards.

I saw this vertical stripe illusion dress from Wet Seal and immediately envisioned Miss Montgomery herself rocking it.

The dress was a simple pick, but then I tried to imagine what kind of crazy shoes Aria would rock in this situation. These Steve Madden combat boots definitely seem fitting. Now, it’s not a pairing I would usually make, but hey, you’re trying to dress like Aria, not this CGM columnist.

I think what this outfit needs to be pulled together is accessories. Aria has been known to rock the clutch, so you should too! Check out this finger studded clutch by Natasha Couture.

I think Aria’s style motivation is to just find things she likes, no matter how unconventional, and rock them with confidence. Just keep that in mind, and you’ll be golden.

What's My Name?: Crazy Baby Name Mania

In Tennessee, north of the rainbow, a bear attacked the pilot inspector eating an apple. Can you guess how many of those words are baby names? If you guessed six, then you’re right! This trend of nouns and verbs as names has become a staple for the upper class. It has even gone so far that some of these celebrity couples have patented their baby names for the sake of uniqueness. For the sake of sanity, let’s hope their nicknames are a tad bit more understandable.

According to the Baby Center, in 2012 the two most popular baby names were Sophia and Aiden. Cute with a twist on tradition. So how do these all-star couples find room to think of such names as Rainbow?

Resparking this trend was couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West when they named their newborn girl North West, nicknamed Nori. It was all only rumored that couple would commit to this name. Somewhere aside other choices such as Dondia, Kanye’s late grandmother’s name, or Kaidence, which would keep the Kardashian tradition strong, things went in a new direction ... literally. No one will really know what goes through the mind of someone with such creativity in naming. Between those two egos and all the flashing lights, keeping the one-of-a-kind flow is critical. Let’s not forget that North West’s future playmate and probably godsister Blue Ivy, baby girl of top couple Beyonce and Jay-Z, won an award for most outrageous baby name.

In traditional American culture names were inspired by religious context. Over the years and throughout a mixture of culture, the name is not only a representation of heritage but personality. It's a tad bit confusing though since it is the parents who choose the name without knowing the personality of the child. What is even more strange is that it is accepted by so many. I mean who wouldn't want to be the child of a famous celebrity even if it meant your name would be Bear?

This trend isn't just occurring in America either. In Europe, the government had to step in and begin to ban the use of certain names. Believe it or not all these babies are regular citizens. Names such as Mr. and Lucifier were restricted by the government officials in the U.K. Yes, someone tried to name their child Lucifer. Try waiting at Rolins Late Night with a name like that.

At the same time, many have begun to criticize these outrageous names by saying they only create even larger boundaries between the famous and average citizen. This is quite true, but I don't think the celebrities win this time. All the fame and fortune in the world couldn't make me name my child Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa, name of Lisa Bonet’s third daughter.

Trend Alert: Dine-In Theaters

It isn’t until after we’ve crossed paths with adulthood that we learn to appreciate the luxuries of being off-campus, at home during breaks or even having a few spare hours to catch a flick. Luckily, my summer vacation has included all of the above. More specifically, I’m excited to share that I’ve opted to witness a new spin on the old classic of dinner and a show. When planning your day’s adventure or a night of entertainment, be sure to check off a two-in-one spot like an AMC Dine-In Theatre on your list of to-dos.

What is it?
The better question is, “what isn’t it?” Because convenience has become a trait that’s assumed to be rightly associated with practically everything, AMC has stepped up to the challenge and provides “movies with a menu” at 25 locations located throughout the country. Not only will you be able to have your cake (plus an array of menu items ranging from buttered popcorn to blackened salmon) and eat it too, friendly staff members who remain attentive to your needs along with plush leather seating allow for the highest degree of comfortability. And for your viewing pleasure? Limited seating held by reservation and bright, crisp visuals displayed on a screen that caters to all rows and sections ensure that every guest enjoys his or her visit.

How’s it done?
The first step is to “select your desired experience,” which varies by venue. According to the AMC Dine-In Theatres’ website, the Cinema Suites are available only for those who are 21 and older and offer “luxury recliners, an extensive menu and full cocktail bar.” Fork & Screen welcomes movie lovers who are 18 and older (as well as those who are attending with a parent or guardian) and can be described as a more casual environment, but one that’s still equipped with the same great food options and bar drinks. Need a place to kickback before or after your film? They’ve got that too! MacGuffins, the bar and lounge, is marked notable by its “modern, inviting atmosphere.” Furthermore, the bar serves lots of tasty treats and pours up a plethora of beers, wines, martinis, margaritas and specialty drinks.

The AMC Dine-In Theatres are most definitely a sophisticated take on the timeless, American pastime. Although your trip to one may be relatively more expensive than going someplace else, overall I recommend them as an opportunity to splurge a little and treat yourself to an unique way to watch the stars in style.

Finn Hudson's 5 Best "Glee" Moments

As the days go by, it isn’t any less shocking or heartbreaking to me that Cory Monteith lost his battle to addiction and, consequently, his life. As a "Glee" fan I took the news particularly hard. Not only did the world lose Cory, the world lost Finn Hudson. Both Cory and Finn possessed such lovable qualities.

Cory’s smile was sweet, genuine and contagious and, since I didn’t actually know him, I’m mourning his loss the only way I know how as a gleek—I’m re-watching some of my favorite Finn moments.

1. Finn sings “Just The Way You Are” for Kurt. This has always been one of my favorite Glee moments. It’s just so sweet, and it’s Finn’s way of telling Kurt “You’re my brother and I accept you just the way you are.” Watch it here.

2. “Stay away from my future wife!” Okay... so maybe Finn didn’t handle this situation with Brody as maturely as he could have, but he loved Rachel and wanted to protect her. Super sweet! Watch it here.

3. “I’m setting you free.” When Finn calls off the wedding so Rachel can go away to New York is probably one of the most romantic scenes I can recall from the show. I cried when I first watched it, and I cry now. Watch it here.

4. Finn sings in the shower. This is the moment I fell in love with Finn Hudson. Mr. Schuester finds Finn singing in the shower after football practice and recruits him to join the Glee club. I think I love this scene because Finn didn’t even know he was any good. He was just singing for the love of singing. Watch it here.

5. Seeing stars. I couldn’t find a video to go along with this quote, but it’s now my favorite Finn moment, and I don’t think what he said could be even more perfect and healing for the situation at hand. Finn bought a star, and this is what he says to Rachel when she asks if he named it after her: “No, I thought about that, but then I named it Finn Hudson. Because there’s already a star named Rachel Berry, and she’s right here on earth, and she’s brighter than any of those stars up there. So I just wanted to make sure that whenever she feels lonely she can look up in the sky, and no matter where I am, she can know that I’m looking down on her.”

According to "Good Morning America," the cast will go back to work in August and Finn’s character will die in the third episode of the new season. However, after that the show will go on hiatus until they figure out how to go on.

"Pretty Little Liars" Style Steal: Hanna Marin

Last week I told you how to look like a Hastings (if anyone can tell me how to get the grades of a Hastings, I’ll be waiting). This time around, I’m going to help you steal my favorite liar’s style.

Hanna Marin is by far my favorite liar. She’s hilarious, gorgeous and probably one of the most loyal people on the show (I say that in hopes that I’m not speaking too soon!).

I’ll be honest—Hanna’s style is a bit absurd for a high school student going to class, but I think that we college women can find an appropriate place to channel our inner Hanna, and here’s what you need to get started.

1. Dresses
But not just any dresses. Hanna’s dresses are always super gorgeous and look date ready for an impromptu night out with Caleb. Ya know… when she’s not getting run over by cars or spying on a potential A-Team member. High-low dresses are super in right now, so you can be sure Hanna would be all over it. I love this black and pink strapless from Wet Seal.

2. A Bold Jacket
One thing that I love about Hanna’s style is she’ll take a super girly piece and add some edge to it with a jacket or a blazer that you might not usually think to pair it with. What do I think Hanna would add with that high-low dress I picked out? This sleeveless studded blazer from Forever 21 just might do the trick.

3. Fabulous Shoes
Hanna is always rocking the heels, which is rather impressive since she seems to be on the run from A quite a bit. Hanna has been known to wear some outrageous shoes, but I’m trying to keep this realistic and Hanna-like, so you should give these Dolce Vita Tremor T-Strap Wedge’s a look over. You can get them at Urban Outfitters.

With these basic staples, and a few extra accessories (Hanna is always adding some jewelry to pull her look together), you’ll be looking as good as Hanna in no time. Maybe you’ll even snag your very own Caleb. I mean, a girl can dream, right?

"Project Runway" Preview: CGM Talks with Timothy Westbrook

"Project Runway" kicked off its 12th season Thursday, July 18. Fifteen new designers and one returning designer started the competition to win the biggest prize in the history of the show. The winner will receive more than $500,000 in cash and prizes.

The show started by introducing all the new designers and bringing back designer Kate from Season 11. The challenge then began as parachuters fell from the sky, and the designers learned that this was the unconventional challenge where they had to use the parachutes for their materials.

One of the contestants, Timothy Westbrook, stood out from the crowd for his more unusual techniques. Westbrook, who is more of a performance artist than a designer, is very big into the sustainability of fashion. During the episode he did not use the electric sewing machine, any hair products, nor did he put any makeup on his model.

While some might call him crazy, Westbrook is more of an inspiration. He also is from my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisc., so I got the opportunity to sit down with him and talk about his life as a designer and who he is as a person.

Westbrook believes in sustainability and trying to reuse and recycle things from the environment. He loves unicorns and sees them as a metaphor for saving the environment.

“I think it also reminds people to believe in anything, because anything is possible,” Westbrook said about his love for unicorns.

In his own life, he tries to reduce as much as possible. He works in a studio with big windows and does not turn on the lights.

“I have non-electric looms where I make all my fabric,” Westbrook said. He makes this fabric out of many different recycled materials, including cassette tapes and plastic bags.

This may be hard for a designer, but Westbrook considers himself an artist who creates art pieces, he said.

“I’m not interested in ready-to-wear,” Westbrook said. “For me, ready-to-wear and sustainability is happening, we don’t need to make it. One of a kind art pieces and sustainability really talk about how to rethink things, and that is what I am able to create.”

During the first episode, the judges were quick to judge Westbrook for his choices to have the model barefoot and without makeup. It even left fans thinking he was a little strange.

Westbrook is an innovator and is doing his part to help the environment.

“I live my own life,” he said. “I’m very happy with what I do and how much I reduce.”

Westbrook had a few tips for college students to live a more sustainable life. He suggests turning off lights, taking the stairs and using a bike instead of a car. These simple changes will help you start taking care of your body and help the environment.

“Just think about the environmental impact of every step of the day,” Westbrook said.

You can see more of Westbrook and his unconventional ways on this season of "Project Runway." Catch up on him and the other 15 designers to see what they create. Check out mylifetime.com/show/project-runway for more information.

6 Summer CD Releases to Watch For

There is nothing better than to roll your windows down and blast some great tunes in your car on a summer day. There are lots of new albums coming out this summer, so we’ve compiled a list of six releases you should keep an eye out for. From rap to electronic, there is bound to an album that perks your interest on our list!

Skillet - Rise
Released June 25

Skillet comes back to the music scene with their ninth album, which follows their recognizable mix of soaring rock music with impacting lyrics. The Christian rock band, which features husband and wife duo John and Korey Cooper as the lead vocals, features a wide arrange of styles and subjects in this album. John Cooper said in an interview with CCM Magazine that the album is a “roller coaster ride.” The album includes 12 tracks, and the deluxe version includes three bonus tracks and a DVD.

Editors - The Weight of Your Love
Released July 1

The British alternative rock band Editors recently released their fourth studio album, The Weight of Your Love. This is their first album since the departure of lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz. They sound like a mix of Kings of Leon and Dashboard Confessional, and lead singer Tom Smith says they pulled a lot from R.E.M and Arcade Fire for this new album. The album features 11 tracks with an option of a double CD, which adds five additional tracks.

Mariah Carey - The Art of Letting Go
Releasing July 23

After a four-year hiatus from music -- marrying Nick Cannon and birthing twins can keep you pretty busy -- Mariah Carey has announced she is releasing a new album! This tightly kept-under-wraps album (Wal-Mart actually leaked the title) is her 14th album. The tracks and album art have not been released, but Mariah has confirmed it will be full of her famous ballads with some not-so-expected styles. The first single, #Beautiful, is currently at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Selena Gomez - Stars Dance
Releasing July 23

Selena Gomez finally is releasing her debut solo album the day after she turns 21-- let’s hope she isn’t feeling too rough on launch day. The album has 12 tracks and will be mostly pop and dance music. She has stated that Britney Spears and Skrillex were both big influences on the music for this album. We expect this to a great choice to blast in your car or living room when you want to have a random dance party.

Tech N9ne - Something Else
Releasing July 30

Tech N9ne has a history of throwing together fast, catchy lyrics with heavy and recognizable beats. This album is sure to head that way, although Tech N9ne stated this album has huge depth to the lyrics and was able to write songs about subjects he was afraid to in the past. This is the 13th album for the Kansas City-bred rapper. The album features lots of collaborations, some with big names such as Cee-Lo Green, Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B and T-Pain. The album has 21 tracks, separated into three distinct sections; earth, wind and fire.

Blue October - Sway
Releasing August 20

Blue October, the alternative band whose album Foiled in 2006 brought them mainstream, will be releasing their seventh album in August. They kicked off this album with a PledgeMusic campaign to help them raise funds for the album. Blue October left their major recording label and is now a fully independent band, so they needed a bit of help financially to create the new album. They were able to reach their goal within three days and are currently at 176 percent of their goal -- hopefully this means the album will be amazing!

6 Reasons Why We Love Disney Movies

They’re cute, they’re animated, they make you laugh, they make you cry and their target audience is 5-year-olds, yet everyone aged 3 to 80 makes time to watch them over and over again. Yes, you guessed right, I am talking about Disney movies.

With the recent release of Disney Pixar’s "Monster’s University" I started thinking about why, no matter our age, we spend our time watching these movies. Some of the first movies I watched as a little girl were "Cinderella" and "The Lion King," and I still love watching them. I mean, at the age of 3 I would watch "The Lion King" about four times a day wrapped up in my Lion King sleeping bag while laying in my Lion King tent; I had the whole nine yards.

The Disney Empire is immortal. It has to be more than the fact that as a child they helped our imagination grow and as a young adult they make our hearts melt.

What does Disney do that makes us come back for more and more year after year? It’s more than Disney magic, I’m sure. There is just something in the air that makes the little kid in all of us come out to play when the castle lights up at the end of the previews.

Here is why I think we love Disney movies at every age:

1. They teach us how to dream
As a child, Disney characters like Cinderella, Snow White and Ariel make us believe that anything can happen if we put our minds to it. Even "Alice in Wonderland," which is a complete dream, shows us just how vast our imagination can be. "Peter Pan" is one of my favorites and might be the best example of learning how to dream. From the fairy tale land to the creative characters, viewers learn that they can create and make any place into something spectacular.

2. As we grow up they help us hold onto our childhood
I still love watching Disney movies, and I’m 19. I would rather watch a Disney movie over some romantic comedy because essentially they are the same. Peter Pan’s motto is “never grow up,” and with a little pixie dust in our hair we never have to when we watch a Disney movie.

3. They teach us how to be ourselves
"Tarzan" is the story of a boy who grows up his whole life among gorillas only to fall in love with another human and must decide which “life” is for him. Pinocchio has to learn how to stop lying and prove he is worth “being a real boy” by just being himself. Disney lesson #456 -- always, always, always be yourself.

4. They make us think anything is possible
Dumbo, for example, is the cutest elephant with the biggest ears ever and are the butt of many jokes. However, with the help of his little mouse friend, Timothy Dumbo proves to the entire circus that his wings give him a special gift -- he can fly. Anything is possible if you try, according to Disney, and I really think that people carry this message with them their entire lives. "The Princess and the Frog," from Disney Pixar, is a great example of doing the impossible. Tiana never thought she would own her own restaurant but she didn’t think she could do it until reaching her lowest point -- being turned into a frog. With a little Disney magic, she reached her goal.

5. They give us unrealistic expectations of love
Seriously, think about it. Prince Charming hunted down Cinderella after she lost her shoe, Prince Eric loved Ariel even though she was a mermaid, and Belle managed to turn a beast into a handsome young man. I think the hidden message here is that love conquers all or something like that, but come on, no guy is going to chase down a girl if she loses a shoe. "Up," a classic Disney Pixar movie, is honestly an adorable love story, and most people would probably give anything to have a love like Ellie and Carl did. I know I would.

6. They help us understand that family is the most important
"Brave," a Disney Pixar movie, taught us that no matter how embarrassing or annoying our family members get, at the end of the day you will always love them. Wishing they were different doesn’t do anything to improve relationships. "Tangled" is another movie that highlights the importance of family. I mean, not all of us are kidnapped princesses, but still, it tugs on your heart strings that her parents continuously look for her and send lanterns into the night sky for her. Also, my mother now sings the song “Mother Knows Best” whenever I fail to take her advice, so the music in the movies sends some message as well.

Why do you love Disney movies? Let us know in the comments below.

The Hottest Summer Reads

It’s so hard finding time for myself during the school year. Between classes, extracurricular activities, studying and my part-time job, there is always somewhere I have to be or something that needs to be done. I’ve had a love of reading since I was very young, so not having time to read for myself is really hard. I look at every summer as a time to relax and finally reclaim my me-time. While you’re perfecting that tan by the pool this summer, I highly suggest you pick up one of these great books. Think of it as a vacation for your imagination.

"The Moon and More" by Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen, author of “This Lullaby” and “The Truth About Forever,” has the remarkable ability to depict the lives of teenage girls effortlessly in her novels. Many authors who attempt to enter the world of teen fiction never seem to truly connect or understand, but Dessen is in a class of her own. I have been anticipating the debut of her 11th novel, “The Moon and More,” for months, and it’s finally here!

In “The Moon and More,” we meet Emaline the summer before she goes off to college and is faced with one of the hardest decisions she’s ever made: to cling to the life she’s always known with her high school sweetheart and loving family or to explore the new and exciting opportunities that could await her at an Ivy League school, accompanied by the ambitious and charming Theo. Emaline’s life is at a fork in the road, and I’m super excited to dive into the pages and see what (and who) she chooses!

"The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green

I admit that I have never read any of John Green’s novels, but with the numerous awards “The Fault in Our Stars” has received (#1 New York Times bestseller, #1 Wall Street Journal fiction list, etc.), this book cannot be ignored.

Hazel has terminal cancer and has always had a depressing outlook on her life. That is, until she meets Augustus Waters in her Cancer Kid Support Group. He reminds her that she may be terminal, but her life isn’t over yet. This novel has received great reviews for being bold, insightful and a real weight on the heartstrings. I am completely intrigued and highly recommend you check this one out for yourself!

"Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins

The world was captivated when “The Hunger Games” hit theaters, and the release of the second in the trilogy, “Catching Fire,” has us all on the edge of our seats. Outside of the movie phenomenon and our growing obsession with Jennifer Lawrence lies this amazing trilogy of books that exposes its readers to a new harsh, yet captivating world.

In “Catching Fire,” we pick back up with Katniss and Peeta after they have risen above the odds and the dominance of the Capitol in winning the Hunger Games, but instead of basking in their glory, they are thrown into another fight for their lives. The Capitol sees Katniss and Peeta as the faces of a rebellion stirring amongst the districts and they refuse to be overthrown without a fight. I am committed to finishing “Catching Fire” before the movie premiers in November, and what better time than this summer? I suggest you do the same!

Summer Festivities 101: Art Fairs

Since there is more free time during the summer, we get stuck on what we should do and drive ourselves into complete boredom. However, there are probably many things going on in your community that you’re missing out on. Art fairs are a popular summertime event and many cities, big and small, have them. CGM decided to spend a day at the “Old Town Art Fair,” a neighborhood art fair in Chicago, and see what it had to offer. Check out some of our favorite things we saw.

1. The art (of course...)
Paintings, glass art, photography, jewelry, sculptures ... the list goes on. You will find almost every type of art. Many artists come from different parts of the country to showcase their pieces. The art can be a bit pricey, but it’s cool to just look at all the different collections. Sometimes you’ll find some artwork or jewelry that is reasonably priced and would make an awesome gift for a friend or relative. The artists love to talk to you about their work and their stories are usually interesting.

2. Live music
Sometimes at the bigger art fairs there will be a few bands playing. No major headliners at this particular art fair, but most of them were decent. It was nice to be able to walk around, look at the art and listen to music. It gave the art fair a more vivacious feeling. There were some energetic folk who danced near the stage to the band’s cover of “Twist and Shout.” Hopefully next year they will have Beyonce headline.

3. Food
Some people come for the art, but almost everyone stays for the food. Art fairs are great to try local restaurants’ cuisine without having to wait an hour get a table and an extra hour to get your food. Even though they don’t cook up everything on their menu, they usually serve their most popular dishes for the public to try. It gets pretty hot during the day, so it’s a good thing there are refreshing beverages. These watermelon lemonades (below) sold like hotcakes at the fair!

4. Freebies
That one perfect word. Being a college student, saving money is of utmost importance for us. Scoring all that free stuff felt like catching gold. Some freebies at the fair included protein bars, reusable water bottles, drawstring backpacks and sunglasses. Good thing they were giving out backpacks. It came in handy for holding all the free goodies.

After a wonderful day spent at the art fair, it’s easy to say that art fairs are a great way to spend your free time during the summer. There are lots of interesting pieces of art to look at or to buy to decorate your place. Even if you’re not a big art person, most art fairs have a live band you can watch or tasty food to try. Check your local paper or city’s website to see if there are any upcoming art fairs or events in your area. Let us know what’s going on in your town this summer!

Movie Review: "Now You See Me"

Looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat this summer? “Now You See Me” is one that will keep you guessing until the end. Filled with magic and mystery, this film brings new meaning to magicians.

The story revolves around “The Four Horsemen,” as they call themselves, as the pull off the greatest magic tricks in history. Jesse Eisenburg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco all start off as four street magicians who are brought together to perform tricks so they can get into the secret magicians club called The Eye. The story starts as the four are brought together and then jumps a year into the future when they are starting to perform together. These tricks include stealing 30 million euros from a French bank during a show in Las Vegas and even giving money to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Staying a step ahead of an FBI detective, played by Mark Ruffalo, and an interpol agent, played by Melanie Laurent, the four have tricks up their sleeves that even the audience cannot see coming. This fast-paced movie keeps you on your toes and guessing until the the very end.

This movie is different from most movies out today, and it is very enjoyable. The whole time it has the audience rooting for the “bad guys.” The “four horsemen” work together to pull off some amazing magic tricks that leave you in awe. I would recommend seeing this movie. It was worth the trip to the movie theater. It is a great movie for a date night, or actually any night.

The 10 Hottest Songs of Summer

It doesn’t matter if you’re out and about, cruisin’ with your crew or at home tidying up from last night’s kickback, music simply makes everything better. For all my fellow music lovers, I’ve put together a set of 10 songs (some snatched right off the airwaves, others found via the Web) that are sure to have you fist pumping all the way through summer 2K13.

1. "Crazy Kids (remix)" by Ke$ha, featuring Juicy J

Recently, I’ve become slightly obsessed with Ke$ha! I’m not sure if it’s because of her new show on MTV entitled, "My Crazy Beautiful Life" or if it’s because I love glitter just as much as she does. Despite my reasons, this song gives me life. When I first heard it, I was reminded of her 2010 banger, “We R Who We R” because of its celebratory, underlying message: being different is okay, and those who party outside of the norm seemingly have more fun anyway.
2. "We Can’t Stop" by Miley Cyrus

That old Miley? Yeah, she’s long gone, folks, and I’m not complaining one bit. I’m pleasantly surprised and pleased with her transition from Disney Channel phenomenon to a budding fashion icon who lives by her own rules. It’s her party and she can do what she wants. It’s her house and she can love whomever she wants. It’s her song and she can sing if she wants. No one can stop the young powerhouse, but just in case the haters and naysayers have any trouble understanding Ms. Cyrus, she states her warning loud and clear in this fun, party anthem: “It’s my mouth; I can say what I want to.”

3. "#Beautiful" by Mariah Carey, featuring Miguel

What woman wouldn’t appreciate being swooned by the oh-so-handsome, incredibly talented, distinctively unique singer/songwriter/producer who goes by the name of Miguel? He might be recipient of some pretty harsh criticism for his failed attempt at jumping over a crowd at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, but his lyrical additions combined with Mariah Carey’s signature voice makes for a definite hit. Take my word or listen for yourself; it’s not hard picturing yourself riding along in an old Chevy truck down a country road and feeling the breeze with this one.

4. "Feel This Moment" by Pitbull, featuring Christina Aguilera

One thing I can say about Pitbull (also known as Mr. Worldwide) is that he always comes through with something that makes me want to dance. The crazy part is I would have never expected Christina Aguilera to team up with the Miami native, but their collab, its upbeat tempo and catchy hook almost forces you to sing along at the top of your lungs. I don’t doubt that everyone loves a song that allows them to temporarily forget about whatever is bothering them, enjoy life and live in the moment.

5. "Bad (remix)" by Wale, featuring Rihanna

For all you Wale fans, here’s a newer spin on a new tune. It took me a while to figure out the true meaning of “Bad,” but now with rude gyal RiRi added into the mix, I’ve come to appreciate Wale’s use of frequent wordplay and the relatability factor present in his music. Don’t be mistaken by the remix’s faster pace; it’s still an ode to all those female maneaters out there.
6. "The Way" by Ariana Grande, featuring Mac Miller

Apologies and compliments are due to this songstress. I actually thought Mariah Carey was being accompanied by Mac Miller on this track. It wasn’t until after I paid closer attention and did my research that I noticed that the melodic vocal runs I heard belongs to Ariana Grande, the actress who is most noted for her role as Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon’s "Victorious." Even though I’m living that single life, “The Way” is beautifully sung and is charmed twice over by Mac Miller’s brief appearances.

7. "The Illest" by Far East Movement, featuring Riff Raff

There’s nothing like hearing a song that confirms how you feel about yourself over and over again. So, my friends, I say to you: assemble your squad, put on those stunna shades and prepare to show up and show out. When hanging with the girls, play this and let all the others know who’s the illest.
8. "Let The Groove In" by Justin Timberlake

I’d be willing to bet money on the assumption that if you’re a 90s baby who still holds a special place in your heart for boy bands, you’ve found yourself imagining Justin Timberlake in a suit and tie or staring into a mirror or two wishing you were Jessica Biel. Fortunately, if you fit into that category, you’re not alone. Millions of others (including myself) still appreciate the former ‘NSYNC frontliner for teaching us how to say, “buh buh bye” and how to dirty pop, but now we can add letting the groove in to the list.

9. "Crooked Smile" by J. Cole, featuring TLC

J. Cole is an artist that I’ve grown to enjoy a lot. Emerging from under the radar at the 54th Grammy Awards by receiving a nomination for Best New Artist, he’s proven to be an emcee not to be overlooked. “Crooked Smile” reminds us that in the presence of tumultuous circumstances, we can and will come out victorious—even if our eyes have shed a few tears and our faces are a tad worn.
10. "#ThatPower" by Will.i.am, featuring Justin Beiber

Everything that Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am touches turns to gold in my book. Adding Justin Bieber, who is continuously living up to his potential as Usher’s protege, was yet another smart move. As a techno-electronic club record, “#ThatPower” brings out the inner dance battle star in all of us.
