Beauty 911: Quick fixes for all your beauty emergencies

Beauty disasters can strike at any moment, but don’t panic! Here are some clever and quick fixes for the most common beauty crises.

Broken Nail Desperate times call for desperate measures. Use the back of a matchbook to file down the damage until you get home for a proper fix.

Greasy Locks If you are lucky enough to have makeup or baby powder, dust a little product and massage into your roots for an uplift. Anything with alcohol in it also will work if you are powder-less. The alcohol soaks up oil. Alcohol hand wipes are especially effective for bangs, and hair spray works for larger areas like your roots.

Puffy Eyes Grab some spoons! Pop them in a freezer for a couple of minutes, and rest them on your eyes. The coolness of the metal will help drain the fluid around your eyes. Follow with an eye cream and your usual makeup.

Frizzy Hair Lotion is not only great for your skin but can smooth out your hair, too. Use a dime-sized dab and flatten over fly-aways. Be careful not to use too much though or you’ll end up looking greasy.

Shiny T-ZoneIf you find yourself with an oil slick and no oil blotting paper, toilet paper or a disposable seat cover works in a pinch. Just gently dab where you are feeling a little greasy, and watch the oil disappear.

Onset of a Pimple When a pimple starts brewing, ask for a glass of ice water with lemon. Hold the ice cube on the area to reduce the swelling. Finish with a dab of lemon on the blemish to dry it out quickly.

What Barbie Can Teach Us About Self Acceptance

There’s a new girl in town! Rumors of a new “natural Barbie doll” are spreading like wildfire. Instead of the tall and skinny typical Barbie, artists have taken the average measurements of women to create this doll that is much shorter and “fatter” than a typical Barbie doll.

Society puts so much pressure on women and even young girls to look a certain way, and I really think this new Barbie doll can send an alternate message: embrace yourself. Tv shows, magazines, movies and billboards can give girls and women the idea that they need to be skinny to be pretty or to feel comfortable.

Not too long ago I wrote an article for my old high school’s newspaper about a Barbie that was covered in tattoos. It seems as if Barbie is trying to cover all the bases when it comes to representing women in today’s society, which is a good thing, but why did it take this long for someone to come up with the idea for an “Average Barbie?”

I took a sociology class and when we came to a unit about media, I was shocked when my teacher showed us a Dove ad that highlighted how much work actually goes into making a model look “beautiful.” The model sits through hours and hours of hair and make-up and then the photo shoot. After the shoot there is even more time editing on the computer screen, including pulling the model’s face in to make it thinner, arching her brows with the click of the mouse and other unnecessary edits. It certainly couldn’t have made the model feel good to be edited, and it certainly made women in society feel inferior about their beauty. We live in a society where beautiful people get more attention whether they be models or actors, and it is nice for someone to create a doll that doesn’t look like it’s a model.

Social media seems to be a big factor in what society deems as beautiful. To society, a size zero is pretty, but for health, a size six or even 10 is a lot better. This new Barbie relates to women who aren’t celebrities and who live life under the radar.

However, sources say that the response to this new Barbie is mostly on the negative side, with people saying she looks sickly. We live in a tough society, and it’s beginning to be clear that people are never going to agree on what the “right” look is. People think the traditional Barbies are too pretty but the new average ones are ugly. While this Barbie looks extremely natural with acne and what looks like bags under her eyes, the message the doll sends is still a good one.

I love the idea of this new Barbie, and I only hope that they make more of her so little girls can grow up knowing they don’t have to be perfect in society’s eyes.

Too Much Fun in the Sun?: How to Heal Your Beauty Routine

We’re nearing the point in the summer where too much fun in the sun can lead to some serious beauty damage. Chlorine, sand and sunshine can start to take a toll on your skin, hair and nails if you don’t take steps to repair the damage. Thankfully, a little TLC can leave you glowing well into August.

Treat Your Hair
Either whip up your own or buy one of the many fantastic masks that restore hair health. A personal favorite is Neutrogena’s Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask. In less than five minutes, dehydrated hair can return to its pre-summer glory. You can even up the ante and wrap your head in a warm towel so that the mask can penetrate deeper. Plus if you are feeling extra ambitious, put the mask or deep conditioner on wet hair and combing it through before hitting the beach. It will make hair more manageable later. Plus it creates pretty waves.

Cool and Clear
Summer wear and tear can leave strands greasy or worse, green from too much pool time. A natural and quick option is to add a tablespoon of baking soda to your regular shampoo. If you’ve been logging some serious pool time (talking to you, lifeguards), I’d recommend a weekly wash with a clarifying shampoo. Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue formula works great. But be sure to only use it once a week and follow with a good conditioner, otherwise you’ll dry out your hair and create new problems.

Preventive Maintenance
It’s usually a whole lot easier to prevent the damage in the first place then it is to repair it. Add a hair BB cream to your routine and watch your hair woes disappear. A classic is It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in product. Buy it once and you’ll be hooked to its amazingly awesome abilities to make your hair look great. Another great option is Pantene Pro-V Ultimate 10 BB Crème. This multi-tasking product works wonders and is easy on your wallet.

Rough Life
A great tan comes with the unfortunate price of dry skin. Even if you’ve avoided the pain of sunburn, skin can turn to leather if you don’t moisturize. Slather on Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Moisturizer Lotion morning and night and watch your skin glow. It will extend your tan, and it smells like the beach. If you’ve done some serious skin damage, try coconut oil. I recommend putting it on at night so you aren’t greasy all day but you’ll wake up smooth and soft.

Tip Top Tips
UV rays can penetrate nails just like they do skin, making them dry and brittle. OPI Nail Envy Natural Nail Strengthener will make them stronger in just a few applications. Follow with an application of cuticle oil to keep your hands looking beach party ready.

Pucker Up
Wind and sun can leave your kisser chapped and sore. Soften up with a quick lip scrub. Add a little sugar to some lip balm and scrub away the flakes. Follow with a thick coat of Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment, and kiss your way through the last days of summer.

Live. Laugh. Tan.

Now that summer has officially started and the hottest weather has yet to arrive, getting that gorgeous natural glow is a must for most. While most people feel they are aware of the negative side effects that come along with tanning, there are many more misconceptions that go unnoticed. As college students it is important to pay attention to our health. So before you jump into your next tanning bed or soak in the sun too long, learn the facts!

Natural sun tans: People seem to think outdoor tanning is the safest way to do it. This is definitely true. However, staying in the sun too late can become a major cause for age spots, discoloration or even gene mutations that cause skin cancer. Most people will suffer from sunburn even with an adequate amount of sunscreen. On the brighter side, outdoor tanning allows the body to soak in tons of vitamin D. According to the Livestrong Health, the best way to make sure this happens is to use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. This will result in higher UVB protection. However, if you have a family history of skin cancer or extremely fair skin, getting a sunscreen with SPF 30 will be a much better fit.

Indoor tanning beds: These have skyrocketed in popularity over the past couple years, as they serve as a quick way to get that bronze glow. But does convenience outweigh safety? In general, because you are in the bed for a shorter amount of time, skin burns decrease greatly. But don’t forget that UV rays are still being placed directly on you. According to cdc.gov, both UVA and UVB rays can lead to cancer, and those under the age of 35 have a 75 percent higher risk of melanoma in the future. Yes, melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. It is highly recommended to take extra precautions when using tanning beds to avoid even the smallest risk.

Spray tans: They are probably the safest method of tanning, and to most they are probably the least amount of fun. Spray tans only affect the outer layer of your skin, and no UV rays are involved. However, there are some cons. A bad application of the tan will leave a very unnatural look. The zebra look isn’t really for everyone and neither is the oompa-lumpa. On top of a bad look, spray tans can be messy. Many will leave clothes and sheets golden yellow or brown. Making sure you find somewhere to apply and someone to properly apply the tan is key to a believable look.

At the end of the day it is summer and we girls just want to look beautiful, eat well and have fun. Start by staying smart and researching the best tan for you. For more information on how to properly tan and which sunscreen to use check out tanningtruth.com. Enjoy your summer, College Glossers!

Nail Polish: The Many Shades of Summer

With the days of summer in full swing, you’re probably showing off your full range of sandals. Don’t be caught with unpolished toes especially with this season’s beautiful variety of nail polish colors. Here are six great colors that are bright, bold and perfect for summer.

Mint
This trendy color has been showing up on everything from dresses to phone cases. Lucky for you it looks great on nails, too. Try painting it over a coat of white polish so the color really pops.

  • Try: China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Re Fresh Mint

Silver
Metallics always look great no matter what. But silver looks especially great in the summer because it accentuates a tan. So whether you’ve been soaking up the sun or you wish you were, try this sparkly option.

Try: Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Color in Silver Sweep

Creamsicle
Nothing says summer like ice cream. Paint this fun color on your feet and hands for a delicious treat.

Try: Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Color in Sorbet Peach

Coral
Coral is both trendy and summer-friendly. It’s bright and adds a pop of color to tan skin.

Try: OPI Chihuahua Bites

Cobalt
Much like the water summer-lovers flock to, blue is having a very big moment this year. Paint on any shade from turquoise to navy. My personal favorite is cobalt because it is trendy but still sophisticated.

Try: Essie Butler

Lavender
For those who wish to keep it a little tamer, try pretty lavender. It is subtle but still captures the essence of warm weather.

Try: China Glaze Tantalize Me

Beauty Review: Rusk Shine Spray

Product: Rusk Sensories Bright Shine Spray

Cost: $13

Scent: Chamomile and Lavender

Where to Buy: Your local Rusk affiliated salon, Amazon, Ebay, sometimes TJ Maxx/ Marshalls

Pros:
  • Easy to use
  • Smells great
  • Helps hair look healthy and shiny, plus sun protection
  • Works on hair when wet or dry

Cons:
  • Meant for use on only blonde/highlighted/gray hair
  • Can easily make hair too shiny or look oily if not spread evenly
  • Scent can be overwhelming to some
  • Difficult to use on thin hair

Overview:
The Rusk Sensories Bright Shine Spray is a light shine spray meant for use on blonde or highlighted hair. It comes in a small sized bottle that is convenient to place in a purse, travel bag or suitcase. It is chamomile and lavender scented, which is pleasant but can be overwhelming to those who do not like strong scents. I do not recommend using this with other highly scented hair products; it would definitely be a scent overload.

The spray can be used on wet or dry hair. I suggest using it on wet hair if you want more softness and dry hair if you want more shine. To use, spritz 3 to 5 spritzes throughout hair and brush through. If using on dry hair, especially if you have fine or thin hair, we recommend spraying it in your hands and rubbing through. The spray can be really heavy on fine hair and end up making your hair look oily instead of shiny; using your hands helps spread the product out more evenly. This is a great shine spray for summer because it contains sunscreen to help protect your hair color from fading in the hot summer sun.

5 Easy Steps to Get Eyes Like Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis is by far one of the hottest young hollywood actresses out there. FHM magazine did after all name her “Sexiest Woman in the World 2013.” She has it all when it comes to looks, but her most coveted feature is definitely her eyes. Those eyes make all the boys stop and stare and make us girls wonder, “how do I get mine to look like that?” Well College Glossers, we have the answer on how to get Mila Kunis eyes in five easy steps. Inspiration for this look comes from Mila’s spot in the Gemfields jewelry ad campaign.

1. Begin with a primer
To make any eyeshadow last through the day, and especially in the hot months of summer, it is important to use a primer underneath your eyeshadow to make it stick and stay crease free. Creme eyeshadows work great as a primer; a favorite of ours is the Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Seashells. Use your finger and smooth the tan shade over entire lid.

2. Base and highlight
Mila has a lot of depth to her eyes. Achieve this by layering a medium brown over a light tan. We love the light tan color on the left side of the e.l.f. Essential Brightening Eye Color palette in Luxe as the base and highlight. Use a medium sized brush to put an even amount of color on your eyelid and underneath your eyebrow on your browbone.

3. Crease
Add dimension to your eyes by using the top right medium brown color of the same e.l.f palette in the crease of your eye. We recommend a tapered brush, which is shaped like a cone. This is the best shape for getting color in your crease -- and only in your crease! Blend into the light tan shade to avoid looking streaky.

4. Outer and inner liner
Mila gets her sexy, smoky eyes by layering a darker brown liner over a lighter one. For the lighter eyeliner, use the same medium brown color from the e.l.f palette you used for the crease. Using a small, wet, angled brush, sweep a medium line on your upper and lower lash lines. Don’t worry about making it perfect; part of the fun with a smoky eye is that it can be slightly messy.

Next, use Maybelline’s Line Stylist eyeliner in Espresso to draw a thin line right next to your upper and lower lash lines. On your lower lash line, make the line darker on the outer corner and lessen it as you go towards your nose. Don’t forget to line your lower lash water line! Using a smudge brush, such as the e.l.f Essential Smudge Eye Sponge, lightly smudge the liner as close to lash line as possible.

5. Mascara and inner highlight
Finish the look off with a coat of black-brown mascara on top and bottom lashes. We love L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original. Add a bit of highlight to the inner corner of your eyes and ta-da! You have Mila Kunis worthy eyes. A perfect choice for the inner highlight is the lighter color of the Maybelline Eye Duets Liner/Shadow in Double Latte.

Get Hot Hair Without the Heat!

I don’t know about you, but the thought of straightening or curling my hair in the humid summertime heat makes me absolutely cringe. Today I spent 45 minutes straightening my thick hair just to immediately put it in a ponytail thanks to the instantaneous frizzing that occurred when I was done. I thought there has to be a way to make your hair look cute in the summertime without using heat—and there is.

1. Wear your hair natural—kind of. I cannot just let my hair air dry and feel comfortable going out in public. My natural hair has a mind of its own—it waves, curls and frizzes. Luckily I found a couple products to tame the mess. Straight out of the shower, I brush out my hair and work some argan oil through it. Any will work, but my favorite is FX Moroccan Moisture Argan Oil. Then, I let my hair air dry slightly before adding Victoria Secret’s So Sexy Soft & Tousled Wave-enhancing Spray. It usually takes two to three applications, but it’s the first wave-enhancing product that I have found to work on my hair!

2. Pick your favorite style of bun and rock it. There are so many options for buns. You have the sock bun, the messy bun, the topknot and the bow bun. Play around with different buns and find one that works for you. I usually opt for the messy bun, and I get more compliments on that 5-minute-do than when I actually put in effort. My method is simple: shower, brush out your hair, put your hair in an upside down bun and then simply tuck the lose pieces back into the bun. There you have it: Sammie’s Messy Bun.

3. Utilize the braid. There are quite a few options here: You can side braid, French braid or fishtail braid. If you don’t know how to do these there are plenty of YouTube tutorials to help you out. You can even combine the braid with other hairstyles. Personally, I like to braid my bangs back and throw the rest in a bun.

I know there are lots of options out there on YouTube or Pinterest for no heat hairstyles. Although I haven’t had much success with some of them because of my thick hair, I definitely encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you!

Do you know of other easy-to-do no heat hairstyles? How about no heat hairstyles for other hair types? Spill your secrets in the comments!

How to Save Yourself from Sun Damage

Beautiful summer temperatures and extra free time can lead to hours in the sun. While time outside is great for getting the perfect tan now, harmful UVA and UVB rays may be doing damage that can lead to wrinkles and dark spots later on. It’s important to keep the protection of your skin in mind while kicking back in the sun.

Before you take to the boats or hit the beaches this summer, take a moment to protect your skin with a good sunscreen. More and more research into harmful sunrays has led to new developments in skin protection. Besides the obvious choice of sunscreen, you can also use foundations and primer creams with SPF in them to protect your skin every day. Whatever you prefer, here’s some of our favorites available for you in your local drug stores.

Sunscreens

Poolside: Neutrogena Wet Skin SPF 85, $11.99

Regular sunscreens are great, but sometimes they don’t soak in well enough to stay on in water. This quick-dry spray allows the sunscreen to soak in fast, leaving you with full protection even in the water.

Everyday: Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50, $14.64

Even if you’re stuck indoors trying to make some summer cash, you should still be using a sun protectant. Sunlight can come in through the windows of your car or office and damage your skin when you think you're safe. This lightweight sunscreen also works as a primer under your normal foundation.

Sensitive Skin: Coppertone Foaming Oil-Free SPF 75, $8.07
Many sunscreens have oils and other components that can lead to breakouts, but even if you’re skin is too sensitive for most traditional sunscreens, you still have options. Coppertone has a great new foaming lotion that helps even those with the most sensitive of skin get quality protection.

Don’t Forget Your Lips!: Banana Boat Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 45, $2.19
Most of us remember to put sunscreen on our faces and shoulders, but what about our lips? The lips are very sensitive and just as prone to sunburn as any other area. Be sure to protect them with this great lip balm or any other SPF chapstick.

Primers

Are you too forgetful to remember sunscreen? Make it a part of your daily makeup routine with a good SPF BB cream or primer! This new sensation is a great way to weave SPF protection into a product that will also help you keep your foundation set, even on your sweatiest of days.

This BB cream incorporates a mixture of moisturizer and tint that will help your skin’s overall health and give you that beautiful summer glow.

This lightweight primer will help keep your foundation on through everything from laying out on the beach to sand volleyball with friends, all the while protecting your skin from sun damage.

Forgot the sunscreen? Apply plenty of aloe vera and skip the pool for a few days, and you’ll recover in no time. But remember every time you burn your skin, it gets harder for you cells to rebuild. Also, extensive sun damage has been proven to lead to sun spots and wrinkles, so protect yourself!

Save or Splurge: Lip Savers

Rough lips are as bad as rough skin. They don’t look flattering, and it doesn’t feel good to have them. Especially with the inconsistent weather we’ve been through, simply applying lip balm just won’t cut it. That is, unless you’re constantly doing it every five minutes.

Now there are two ways to fix this overnight: the save way or the splurge way.

If you want the ultimate treatment for your lips, use Bite’s Whipped Cherry Lip Scrub. The natural ingredients will scrub away dead skins on lips, leaving them smooth and moisturized. The cherry smell is a sweet bonus. You can have velvety, luscious lips for $18, an investment for the perfect lipsticked lips.

A great alternative that I can’t go to bed without is Bath and Body Works’ My Favorite Night Balm. No matter how dry your lips are at night, you better believe that they will transform into soft and smooth lips in the morning. For $7.50, you can apply the balm every night for fresh lips the next day.

So to keep your smooch-tool looking rich and healthy, will you save ... or will you splurge?

Save Or Splurge: BB Cream

Ever since my best friend introduced me to BB Cream last summer, I have become obsessed and continue to use it in my everyday makeup routine. We were in Bali island, and I wanted to cover my uneven skin tone with something that would not make my face look cakey. Especially after wearing sunscreen on my face, can you imagine wearing another layer of powder or foundation after that? Ew, no. So she offered me to try her BB Cream by Etude House, a Korean cosmetic brand, and I never stopped using it since then. It’s light, it evens out my skin tone and it has all these additional benefits that you can’t get from just powders or foundations.

For those of you who are not familiar with BB Cream, it’s a cream-like moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunblock. By applying a pea-size amount evenly to your face and neck, BB Creams prime, hydrate and protect the skin — all in a light formula. It also conceals and treats dark spots caused by acne and sun exposure and evens out the skin tone. This one-stop cream was founded and developed in Korea, but lately American cosmetic brands have been releasing their own version of BB Creams. So the basic contents of all BB Creams are the same, but some have extra benefits that the others don’t. The SPF among different brands varies, so that’s also another factor to consider when buying BB Creams.

As if all those benefits aren’t enough, BB Creams are also versatile enough to use alone or with other base products, such as concealers or powders.

Korean cosmetic companies have been innovating and improving BB Creams for quite a while now, including the Korean brand Dr.Jart+. For a high-quality product that will definitely give you all the BB Cream benefits and also hydrates your face all day with their Water Bead Technology, Dr.Jart+’s Water Fuse Beauty Balm with SPF 25 is one of the best you can get out there. This product has only one shade available, unlike other brands that have various shades for different colored skin tones, because the formula enables the balm to blend with and be absorbed by any skin types and colors. There’s no way that you can go wrong with this BB Cream, except for the fact that it costs $34. I consider it an investment that will save your face and your time in the long run.

The best one from the drugstore for our not-so-friendly pocket is Revlon’s Photoready BB Cream. For only $8.49, Revlon’s BB Cream comes in three different shades identical to their other base products. So for original Revlon users, you’re in luck! The cream has a dewy and satiny finish to it, and it has a higher SPF than other brands. The best part about Revlon’s BB Cream is that is has no smell, which can be noticeable and unbearable in other products.

So for a five-in-one skin saver like this, will you save … or will you splurge?

Women's History Month: Most Influential Women in Beauty Today

What do bloggers, editor-in-chiefs and former models have in common? Stunning beauty tips, of course! And since it is Women's History Month, CGM is counting down the best and brightest women influencing your vanity and beauty routine right now.

1. Pat McGrath

She’s called the most influential makeup artist in the world, and once you get a glimpse of her resume, you’ll know why. In 2012 alone, McGrath worked with everyone from Vanity Fair to Vogue Italia on their editorial shoots. And this year McGrath already has five advertising campaigns under her belt, including those for Louis Vuitton’s spring/summer ‘13 collection and Anna Sui’s new lipstick collection. And it’s only March!

The former model, a Northhampton, England native, has also designed the makeup looks for 35 women’s ready-to-wear autumn/winter shows back in 2008 and is in high demand with celebrities from Oprah to Madonna. You can find her expert advice in the pages of Allure magazine, or just trolling her Twitter account -- she’s a huge social media buff, and sometimes she Tweets (or Instagrams) backstage tips and tricks from the pros.

2. Bobbi Brown

According to Bobbi Brown’s website, she became enthralled with makeup at a young age when she watched her mother put it on. Now one of the most recognizable names in beauty, she’s come a long way from a young freelance makeup artist in New York City. What made Brown so popular was her theory that it shouldn’t be obvious that you’re wearing makeup--not unless you want it to look obvious, anyway. It started with a lipstick that didn’t smell or taste bad and looked like lips. Now, nearly 22 years later, Brown has a multi-million dollar cosmetics company with her name on it! She is also the author of seven books and the exclusive beauty editor of "The Today Show." How’s that for a dream come true?

3. Carine Roitfeld:

Former editor of Vogue Paris for 10 years, from 2001 to 2011, Roitfeld is taking the fashion world by storm--not that she hasn’t already. According to models.com, she’s a former Gucci consultant and freelance stylist who climbed the ranks of magazines before taking the helm of one of the most influential. Now she’s now branching out with her own magazine, CR Fashion Book, and after totally stealing the spotlight during New York Fashion Week, will be releasing a line with MAC Cosmetics.

It’s all about Roitfeld’s signature style: edgy, dark, irreverent, but simple and sophisticated. In Fashionista.com’s article on the line, she says she even encourages sleeping in mascara so that you wake up looking “tired but tired sexy.” Not pay attention to the woman who took Parisian fashion above and beyond? C’est fou! (That’s crazy!)

4. Jane Pratt

Jane Pratt is a cult icon in the magazine industry after founding both Sassy and Jane, two defining publications for a generation of teens. Her website xoJane.com is a must-read for anyone searching for touching, hysterical and unbelievable real stories and opinions submitted by real women (and a motley crew of editors). Now she has officially launched her new beauty-centered website xoVain.com, and the same mission of using women’s stories in an empowering way carries over. The xoVain.com About page describes the website as: “a new kind of beauty site where there are no secrets. We believe in using beauty as a tool to make women feel good about themselves, for themselves.” With titles like “Am I the Heaviest Beauty Editor in New York City?” and “I Don’t Shoot Up; I Just Have Eczema,” Pratt pushes the boundaries of contemporary beauty writing, and her touch as editor-in-chief resounds throughout the entire site.

5. Amy Nadine

Amy Nadine (right) is a makeup artist most known for her work on Lauren Conrad and Rachel Bilson on the celebrity circuit, but she’s also gaining acclaim with her website TheBeautyDepartment.com. Launched with Conrad and Kristin Ess in 2011, Nadine posts beauty, hair and nails tips on the site to hundreds of thousands of eyeballs a day -- and growing! It’s a frequent Pinterest pinning hub, and she’s known for staying ahead of the trends. Nadine is definitely a power to watch in the makeup world, and her star is only growing brighter.
